At some point after he left the shooting range, Romeo realized he ran a clothing shop and there was a formal dance the next day.

He quickly went into town, arranged the formalwear on the racks so it looked more attractive, and turned the store sign to open. If no one came in, he'd at least get a new tux for himself.

Merlin could not be more happy that Arthur had wanted to try the local dress for the dance. That meant no hat for him.

"The dresses are--" Merlin floundered for a word as he looked around. "--small."

"You can go through dresses as much as you like once we're through," Arthur said, ever patient. "What looks like men's formalwear?"

"Ha ha." Merlin shot him a look and started for something that looked vaguely masculine. "Are you escorting anyone?"

"I didn't see the need," Arthur replied, "The feast should be entertainment in and of itself." A pause. "I hope."

"You'll find something to keep yourself entertained," Merlin said, not looking back at him as he felt the fabrics. "And I'll be there, of course."

Merlin was not rolling his eyes. Really.

But the grin he couldn't hide. "You're too kind, sire."

"Don't thank me too quickly." Arthur, too, glanced at the clothes. "You'll still be expected to entertain me if it gets really boring. And keep the wine coming."

"Romeo," Arthur greeted. He was in the store anyhow, so he might as well be polite. "How does the week see you so far?"

After last night's radio, he felt that was a safer opener than 'you've lived through the weekend'.

"Arthur," Romeo returned. "It's been pleasant enough, if quiet. And of course I'm pleased to be myself again, though the island was kind to me by its standards over the weekend. How does it find you?"

"In need of some formalwear, but I think Merlin's got it," he said, glancing about the store. "He is right about the dresses, though. They're awfully... small."

Even if he was used to Morgana's busom.

"Shorter and more fitted than you're used to, you mean?" Romeo supplied, because he didn't really see the dresses they had as small.

... most of them. A few were on the immodest side even for his tastes.

"The suits should be closer to familiar."

"I wouldn't say more fitted," he said, "But my father's ward would be a better judge of that."

He could compliment Morgana when she wasn't around. "So you... work here?"

"Your father's ward?" Romeo echoed. "A girl, I would assume. And actually I manage it these days; the last owner left and I had seniority."

Or else Tink just thought he was prettier than Toby or Jenny; Romeo would never be clear on that point. But he thought he understood the hesitation in Arthur's tone, and he made a matter-of-fact statement by way of explanation.

"I was a bit short of money, when I took the job."

"Fair enough," Arthur allowed, "There's little ill in being a shop owner. And yes, she would be a woman." A troubling one, at that. "At least the island is well-staffed."

Alice was in quite a cheery mood as she tripped into the store, late on Thursday.

"Hello," she grinned. "I shall hope that this is not where you inform me that you are, sadly, out of dresses for the dance."

"If I were to inform you of that it would be a most knavish lie, m'lady," Romeo said with a grin. "So I'll make you know we're full stocked on dresses, if you'd like to browse."

"I would, very much," she said lightly, dropping him a curtsy. Which still struck her as awkward when she was clad in jeans. "To be quite honest, I should like to purchase one more than I should like to browse, but one leads to the other easily enough. After all, I don't know which dress yet."

"Have you a color or a style in mind?" Romeo asked, shifting into salesman mode easily enough. "I'd be happy to help you browse, if I may."

"Not entirely," she said, frowning. "Something not quite typical, though I suppose all dresses are unique in their own rights. Shiny, perhaps. A sparkling emerald green, or a deep blue. Something elegant, even, but not boring."

"That would suit you entirely too well," Romeo decided as he started flipping through the nearest rack. "It would make a mermaid of you, though without the handicap of a tail."

"I think I should like being a mermaid," Alice mused, finding a nearby rack and holding up dresses against herself. "Though only if classes were moved underwater. It would seem rather undignified, otherwise, to have to roll one's way through hallways and down stairs."

I think what I like about this icon is that it's the same pose as in my default, down to his hair. I should see if he's posed this way in the last few years to complete the set.
