The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday [2/27]

It was looking like another quiet day, with the only excitement being Gunther refusing to come out of his room because he felt unappreciated. So Mary pitched in to help the sous chef in the kitchen, using a recipe she saw the other night on the Food Network. She was starting to wonder if Gunther needed his own spring break.

She's pondering a getaway of her own.

It was terribly quiet, and, while around here, Charlotte counted that as mostly a good thing, she was going a little crazy not having anything to do, what with holding off on the exhibit until after the school's spring break.

So she thought she'd swing by the hotel to stave off an hour or so of boredom. "Morning, Mary!"

"Hello Charlotte!" said Mary, smiling. "Why does it feel like we're the only ones left in town?"

"Because we practically are?" Charlotte offered. "Although, really, I'd much rather be complaining about how quiet is than it being the opposite."

"It is nice to get some quiet around here. I'd almost think of going away myself on a trip, except I have no idea where I'd go," said Mary.

"There's also," said Charlotte with a sigh, "the whole issue of time. I mean, it feels like, right now, I've got too much of it, but Dale and I were talking about a little get-away for ourselves, too, but it seems that, when it come actually doing it, all of that time just..." She gestured widely with her arm, "Poof! Disappears!"

"Something always seems to come up, doesn't it? And then you get distracted and a week goes by, and suddenly you're wondering what happened to that get-away? Yeah, I seem to be familiar with that," said Mary.

"Perfect example," Charlotte said, frowning slightly. "Notice how I still haven't organized that little tea get-together?"

"I noticed. I figured you were as distracted as I was," said Mary with a chuckle.

"Have you had anything exciting going on?" Charlotte wondered, figuring that Mary, who wasn't likely to have settled into the same sort of domestic routine as Charlotte had, might have had more of an opportunity. Besides, the only notable thing that'd happened with her recently was...something she decidedly didn't want to talk about if she could help it.

"Oh, no, nothing exciting going on here," said Mary. "Most excitement I've had in the last week was getting a package in the mail on Monday."

"Oh?" Packages could be exciting! "What was it?"

Mary kind of scrunched up her face. "Um, it was just a replacement for something a friend from Las Vegas sent me after George Michael moved out," she said.

"Replacement?" Charlotte asked, head tilting. "After..."

And then little wires in Charlotte's brain connected thought A with thought B and made her eyes into little Os.

"Oh."

"Yeeeeah," said Mary. "Apparently the Frisky Ferret couldn't keep up with me because it just died last week. I had to upgrade to a newer model."

Charlotte was just going to...take a moment, to try and figure out if there was anything she could possibly say to that that wouldn't just result in a lot of word babble about the exact topic she didn't want to delve into at the moment.

That moment of silence just made Mary more nervous. "It's been eight months and it's not like this town is crawling with single, available men who can deal with all of my issues," she protested.

"Oh, no!" Charlotte said quickly. "I mean, there certainly isn't anything wrong with it. I didn't mean that at all. I mean, I don't, because, well, I have...Dale, but, I mean...even then...I mean!"

Word vomit. There it was.

"Err..."

Charlotte cleared her throat.

"At least you got the problem taken care of?"

Mary cringed, wishing she hadn't said anything. "Yes, it's all taken care of. The new one works very, very well."

"That's good!" Charlotte said, nodding firmly. "If it didn't, you might have had to...I don't know, take it up with the manufacturer or something."

"Yeah, I'm not sure I would have done that," said Mary, chuckling.

"Ohmygosh," Charlotte gushed. "Can you imagine? That would be so embarrassing!"

"It would have been just awful," said Mary. "How do you argue something like that? I was just ready to let my friends Delinda and Sam argue it for me since they bought it in the first place."
