The Park, Wednesday evening

Part of being a Jedi was fighting bad things that would threaten people. Zayne wanted to prove himself worthy of being a Jedi. That's why he was out looking for some harpies to challenge himself against.

Unfortunately, he was finding it completely impossible to find any close to the ground, and he wasn't exactly good enough to pull any down from the sky. The will of the Force wasn't kind to him.

When Jaina realized that the things in the sky didn't seem to be specifically harming anyone, she'd tried to shut herself in to get some things done. And then they'd made too much of a racket outside her window for her to let that continue, so it was an irritated Jaina and her lightsaber outdoors.

"Yeah, I'm over this," she decided.

"Hey Jaina," Zayne said. "It could be worse, though. They could be attacking people. In the park. Right now." He sighed.

"I wanted to see how well I could hold my own against one. Try to protect people from a monster," Zayne said. "But they don't seem to be up for a fight."

"Yeah, they're a little more intent on being nuisances," she grumbled, glaring up at one. "And generally I think it goes, hold own against one, then protect people." She did feel bad for him, though. She didn't hear a lot of complaints like this.

"That depends on if I saw anyone in trouble from one," Zayne said. "Then protecting them would come first."

"When's the last time you met a Jedi who didn't find their way into trouble?" Zayne asked.

And that's when a harpy decided to swoop down and kick him in the chest, knocking him to the ground.

Immediately Jaina was unclipping her lightsaber from her belt, watching to see what the thing would do next. "Okay, you have a point."

Zayne pulled his lightsaber from his belt and switched it on. The harpy swooped back down, knocked the saber away, and kicked Zayne while he was down.

Zayne didn't like the cheating monster.

Jaina really had honestly never seen that happen before. "You got this one?" she asked, wanting to give him a chance at it.

The harpy pinned Zayne to the ground with one huge bird foot and tried to claw at him with the other. Zayne barely got a hand up to block it with the Force, but he was still at a disadvantage. "No! Help!"

Poor guy. Jaina switched on her lightsaber, moving quickly forward to catch the harpy in the back with it, and then pulling the blade in an upward motion. Someone didn't mess around.

The harpy was easy enough to push off of him now that it wasn't trying to claw his face out.

"Thanks," Zayne said. "You know, that actually didn't go too badly for me. No destruction of property or anything."

"Is that normal?" she wondered, prodding the harpy with her boot to make sure she didn't need to stab it more.

"Pretty much," Zayne said, getting up and starting to look for his lightsaber. "Even when I don't actually do anything to cause it, it still manages to happen. Master Lucien always says that I'm living proof the Force has a sense of humor."

"It's not completely untrue," Zayne said. "With the way my luck goes, the Force pretty much has to have it in for me."

"The Force doesn't have it in for anyone," she told him. "You just haven't learned exactly how to use it yet." And when his Master said things like that, she couldn't imagine why. She understood breaking people down to build them back up to be better, but considering how down on himself Zayne was, his Master seemed to be missing the vital building up part.
