Wellspring Arms & Meditation Center, Wednesday

Ino hummed as she wandered into work at her usual ridiculously early time and, after a quick stint of cleaning—just enough to keep it half decent—she cheerfully devoted herself to taking care of her plants for a few hours. Babbling cheerfully at them and everything.

And then wandered over to flop in Cable-san’s chair and scribble in one of her notebooks.

Who wouldn't mind!

Romeo hadn't seen Ino since the cruise, but their last conversation had gone badly enough that he wasn't quite ready to make a social call.

However, between target practice and the harpies, he had run through almost all of his bullets, and so he braced himself and went into the store to buy more, or at least try to.

"Good morning, Ino," he tried, lingering over a case of guns as if nothing might be wrong.

Her eyebrows had raised when she'd seen him come in, and then saying something like, well, that...

"Well," Ino said, leveling a long stare at him, "it was."

"....what?"

Some of the confusion on his face as he looked up at her was playing innocent, but most of it was real, honest lack of understanding

If Ino's eyebrows had the power to raise up off her face, that's what they'd be doing right now.

"Good morning, Ino," she parroted back at him. "Excuse me?"

Romeo raised his head and tilted it, still not sure where this was coming from. "Is it not before noon, or is that not your name this month?"

"You can call me Amy if you'd like," why not, one girl already thought that was her name, "but you seem to have forgotten that I'm still pretty mad at you."

"What, for marrying Angela on the cruise?" Romeo asked, just in case he had done something else stupid and forgotten it. "That's in the past. And Amy doesn't suit you at all."

"I didn't pick it," she shrugged. "But it works." It still didn't suit her though. "And in the past doesn't mean 'gone and forgotten', in case you didn't know."

"I know that, I just didn't know you would still be so angry at me over it that you couldn't say 'good morning.'" Romeo said, irritated, as he pushed his hair out of his eyes. "Especially as it did you no harm."

"Good morning ought to be meant," she retorted. "Not just something to be said for the sake of being said. And no harm to me or not, it certainly affected how I think of you, so I suppose that depends on your definition of 'harm'."

Romeo stepped back a little, folding his arms. "People with manners say good morning to show they mean no harm, but, as you seem to mean me harm, I can see why you wouldn't be able to say it," he observed. "What do you think of me now, then? As it seems you'd like to tell me, anyhow."

"I'm well aware that my manners aren't up to your levels, but then there's nothing wrong in being terribly honest either. And if I'd truly meant to hurt you, you'd have gotten a notebook to the face as you walked in." Which, ow. "But, of course, I'm just a silly little girl who lacks a decent amount of empathy and morals, so what do I know?"

Ino was still kinda pissy about that from class yesterday. Not that it had anything to do with Romeo, though. She shrugged. "I trust you less, and I think you deserve that. Forever and ever ought to be just that, and you didn't stick with it, you broke it 'cause you were drunk, and annoyed, and I don't think that's a good reason. I don't think there is a good reason."

That was a lot to process, and Romeo had the fleeting thought that he could make the argument that he had only knowingly promised his forevers to a dead girl, and that the person he wanted to give them to now wouldn't take them.

That, though, wasn't a conversation he would have with Ino. Not now, perhaps not ever.

"You speak of a lot of things you know little enough about," Romeo said, his voice low and slow. "And you say it's not meant to hurt, but it surely has. Perhaps there is something wrong in being terribly honest."

"Would you rather I lie, and pretend, and then have the whole thing come to light at the worst possible moment?" she asked. "Different kinds of hurt, then. This one is more conductive to fixing things, maybe."

A few weeks too had helped with that.

"I've never pretended to be an easy friend, Romeo. I am just as likely to hurt someone as heal them, if it's for their own good."

"And this is for my own good?" Romeo was decidedly skeptical. "I know I did something terribly, stupidly hurtful. But I graduate in a matter of weeks, Ino. I am who I am. You need not like it, but I am not sure how refusing to bid me a good day heals me."

"You're still on with that?" she demanded. "The issue with good day is that you come here acting like everything is forgotten and wonderful and no, it's not."

"I didn't start it!" Romeo answered. "I said three words to you and you ... you went mad."

"I," she said, with great dignity, "did not go mad until you pretended everything was alright."

Romeo stared at her for a moment without speaking, turned on his heel, left the shop, and came back in.

"Hello Ino, I'm glad nothing's attacking today, I know I hurt Yurika badly but we're working on it, may I please buy some bullets?"

Sarcasm, apparently, was strong in him today.

Sarcasm was better than dumb innocence, in her opinion.

"Hi Romeo!" she chirped, because really, this was amusing. "Nothing's attacked yet, I'm still mad at you, and I think you've got more issues to work out than just the ones with Dojima-san, and what kind of gun, please?"

Ino was insane and would rather have an argument than smooth past things. Romeo supposed that was good to know. Still, he would press on and play along, out of curiosity more than anything.

"My handgun," he said. "I like ~~handwavey handwavey~~. What sort of problems are you diagnosing me with?"

Shoot things! But only with permission!

I made it from being in bed to out the door and walking to the bus stop in eight minutes today!
