The Gig, Sunday

The horses were incredibly relieved to see that Firekeeper was once again her normal self instead of a small child when she showed up for work. Incredibly relieved, and incredibly curious as to what she'd gotten up to last weekend. Eventually, though, they got the hint that she wasn't inclined to answer any of their questions and she and Blind Seer settled in to wait and see if anyone stopped by.

Yeah, Tahiri was fidgety and Fight Club wasn't until later.

Clearly this warranted stopping in to see her barefoot buddy at work, so she headed into town and into the Gig, where she followed Firekeeper's Force presence into the stables and promptly and unceremoniously plunked herself down on a bale of hay.

"Hello," Firekeeper replied, glad for a respite- any respite- from Smudge's rather insistent pestering about what she'd done last weekend.

Tahiri rolled onto her stomach and put her chin on her folded arms, peering at Firekeeper thoughtfully. "You look like you could use a break from something."

"Horses," she said, with a roll of her eyes, "is terribly nosy creatures."

Tahiri opened her mouth to say something about how she was glad she didn't have Jacen's gift with animals, which only came right back around to why Ben was home and how little sense it still made (no matter how much she tried to rationalize it) for things to have come to that. She shut her mouth again and shook her head, picking a straw of hay to shreds before she spoke up again.

"Can't you tell them to knock it off? I mean, if it's something you don't want to talk about."

It was a (she thought) subtle probe as well as a suggestion, yes.

"Have," she nodded. "The others stop, but Smudge keep asking about last weekend."

"Oh." Yeah, definitely sounded like a sore spot. More of one than it was for her, even, if she wanted to hazard a guess. Tahiri looked around the stable. "Which one is Smudge?"

We all live upon death, even the deer. There is no escaping that part of the cycle. Your dying will not save the deer. Your dying will not reverse the fire.

She shook her head to clear away the remnants of Questioner's voice, then pointed to the chestnut mare (http://waytoomanynames.livejournal.com/profile). "Smudge. Also, Duke, Kally, and Bold," she pointed to the others in turn.

"Hi," Tahiri greeted the horses, filing their names away in her memory. "Cut her some slack, will you?" she added to Smudge with just a touch of the Force behind the suggestion.

She had no idea if that would work or not, but it couldn't hurt to try.

It either worked or Smudge suddenly found that bucket of oats terrribly interesting all on her own.

"So," Firekeeper said. "What bring you here, other than thinking I need break?" look, she could so do this small-talk thing!

"What, I can't just come down to visit for the sake of it?" Tahiri asked. Not that she had, and not that she was trying to pretend she had, either. "Hanging around by myself is no fun."

Firekeeper was inclined to disagree, really, because she found being by herself pretty enjoyable, most of the time. Not that having company was bad exactly, but company for humans usually came in the form of crowds. One or two people at a time, though? That was good.

"Being annoyed by horses no fun either," she said. "So, am glad you is here."

"They can annoy me for a while. I don't mind," Tahiri said. "They might be the only people who didn't hear my whole life story when I was nine, five million times."

"You talk a lot then," Firekeeper noted. So had she, really. Well, perhaps not compared to the average person, but compared to herself now, yeah.

This time, Francine brought, as she'd promised, snacks that horses could eat. Which hadn't stopped her from munching on carrot sticks and an apple on her way over, since they were also snacks that humans and human-shaped wolves could eat.

"I know, I know," Tahiri half-teased, half-grumbled. "Everyone keeps pointing that out. Ben said I was spastic," she added, the am not clearly implied.

"Hi!" Firekeeper replied, glad for the distraction. "You remember!"

"Spastic?" Firekeeper frowned at the unfamiliar word.

Tahiri chuckled. "I don't know how to explain that one. But I wasn't that bad!"

"If you say," Firekeeper said with a nod.

"I was, wasn't I?" Tahiri asked. "We were both pretty different back then."

"I kind of missed it last week on account of being three," Francine said with a wave. "Sorry about that."

"Is okay," Firekeeper shrugged. "Horses sended me away then anyway." Even though her younger self had known plenty about taking care of horses.

Firekeeper nodded. "Fire had not yet taken my human parents, then."

"You used a different name then, too," Tahiri observed quietly. "How old were you, when they . . . ?"
