There was nothing better to make a girl feel appreciated than to get a frantic phone call from her girlfriends in Las Vegas, or so Mary thought as she listened to Delinda's pleas for help. "No, seriously, there's nothing you and Sam can do, but you think I can help?" she asked.

"Really, Mary, we've tried, but it's no use! Piper barricaded herself in a luxury suite and hasn't stopped bawling her eyes out since her ex-boyfriend showed up, and he's refusing to leave the lobby until he talks to her," said Delinda, sounding rather frantic.

"Then you get Danny to throw him out," suggested Mary.

"Danny's off in Wyoming with Cooper, but that's not the problem!" cried Delinda. "The problem is that none of us can get through to the girl the way you can. That's your thing, Mary! You listen to people. None of us really listen to anyone."

Mary sighed. "Okay, I have an idea. Go down to the spa and get Polly, and have her get a bunch of chick flick DVDs to watch with Piper. That should keep her occupied until security gets rid of the ex-boyfriend."

"Mornin' Mary." Tully smiled as he came down from his room. He spotted the sign proclaiming the special. "Ooh, hope there's still some of that left later."

"Oh, then you don't know Gunther! He's churning out plenty of cheesecakes. There'll be leftovers for days!" Mary reassured Tully.

"Good because as much as I'd love to try it, breakfast doesn't quite seem like the best time. How've you been by the way, I haven't seen you in a bit."

"Oh, I'm good. I've just been kind of swamped with paperwork lately so I haven't gotten out much," said Mary. "There was this whole legal mess when a friend of mine in Las Vegas died and he had two separate wills. They finally got it all sorted out, and in the final settlement, he left me a pretty big chunk of his business."

"Two separate...eesh. That must have been fun. Nice of him to leave you stuff though. Unless it's a headache. I'm finding the lighthouse to be both."

"Well, I'm fortunate that I used to work for the Montecito Resort Group, but having to review operations for all of their hotels is time-consuming," said Mary. "But I just own about a 1/3 of the shares. There's another guy who owns a larger stake, so he's been making all the decisions and I just weigh in with my opinion when it's necessary. I just want to be ready for the next shareholders meeting."

"Is that gonna be in Vegas?"

"I hope so! It would give me a chance to see my sisters and my god-daughter," said Mary. "But I just talked to someone earlier who said that the majority owner, Cooper, is at his ranch in Wyoming this week with the president of the Las Vegas casino. That would be another state I've never been to."

Tully grinned. "I'm from Wyoming originally."

"Another reason to visit and check things out," said Mary. "We'll see. I've already told Cooper that as long as he gives me use of the corporate jet, I can be anywhere he needs me. The one restriction I set was that I have to be in Fandom for graduation, just in case the island disappears or something."

"...Is that likely to happen?" Somehow, the island could still surprise Tully.

"Weird stuff tends to happen around here at graduation. Last year, the entire island jumped halfway across the world," said Mary. "I'm not sure what to expect this year, but I'd prefer to stay on-island just to be on the safe side."

"So...where did Fandom used to be?"

"When I first got here, it was a little further south, closer to Virginia. Oh, and part of the island wasn't even there before," said Mary.

"Which part?"

"Pretty much everything east of Selkie Point. In fact, there used to be a beach there," said Mary. "So the boardwalk and all that wasn't part of the island until they joined up last fall."

"...Huh. So the lighthouse didn't used to be part of this island." he said thoughtfully. "I'm gonna have to re-think some things."

"But it's a welcome addition. It's so picturesque," said Mary.

"I'm glad you liked it." he chuckled. "I just always thought the woman who left it to me had known what this place was like. But from the sound of it, she might not have known the lighthouse was on this island."

"Which is kind of weird to think about," said Mary.

"Which is pretty much par for the course here." he laughed. "Either way I'm still sure she's looking down right now and laughing her ass off."

"Yeah, and she's probably got my ex-boyfriend with her, laughing at me trying to negotiate between his brother, his ex-wife and a cattle rancher who came out of nowhere," said Mary.

"Those the other share holders?"

"Sort of. The ex-wife was forced to sell her shares to the cattle rancher when she couldn't raise enough money to pay back taxes on the property," said Mary. "Now she's hooked up with the brother. I'm not sure if she's taking advantage of him or vice versa, but he tried to hook up with me at one point. I told him to get lost."

"Your life sounds very complicated."
