The Arms Hotel Lobby, Tuesday [4/28]

There were times that Mary missed having a whole crew of security and surveillance people. While the Arms Hotel was normally very quiet, today her day started with a noise complaint. She went up to the floor in question and could hear the TV blaring before she even stepped out of the elevator. She banged on the door for five minutes without an answer, and finally she had to just use her master key to get it.

The reason the room's ~~NPC~~ occupant hadn't answered the door? Because he was naked and handcuffed to the bed. "Good grief, I thought stuff like this only happened in Vegas. And please tell me you still have both of your kidneys," said Mary, trying very hard to not look at the guy. "Think you can hang on until I get a bolt cutter or something to cut through those handcuffs?"

She was totally getting out of there and sending Gunther to deal with it.

Who is trying to get the image of that guy out of her head.

It had taken Dani a while to lug all her suitcases to the hotel from the causeway, mainly because she had snapped at the rickshaw driver and he refused to take her. She pretty much dumped everything in a pile by the door and went to the desk.

"Excuse me? I would like to check in now," said Dani, crossing her arms over her chest and tapping her foot as if she was in a hurry.

"Oh, are you here for graduation? You're a few days early, aren't you?" asked Mary, slightly surprised. She tried again in vain to clear the image of Naked Handcuff Guy from her mind. "Your name, please?"

"The name's Davis and I'm not here for any sort of graduation," said Dani. "I'm going to be in town for a week to check out a business opportunity. I'd like a suite, please. This place better have sheets with a thread count of 800 or better."

"You'll find 800 or better in our rooms, I can assure you," said Mary. "I'm sorry, but do you have a reservation? There is a big event this weekend and I'm afraid a lot of the suites are booked already."

"No, I do not have a reservation because this dinky little place doesn't do online reservations!" said Dani, frowning. "You cannot possibly have all of your suites booked for this weekend."

Oh, it was another one of those difficult customers, Mary realized.

"Please believe me when I tell you that all of the suites are booked this weekend. I might be able to get you a junior suite, though..."

Dani didn't say a word, but she grimaced at the words "junior suite."

The look did not go unnoticed by Mary.

"...or I can find you a double," she finished.

"Well, that is just unacceptable," said Dani. "I want to speak to your manager."

"I am the manager," said Mary, standing up straight. "And I also own this hotel, so as far as this place is concerned, you're not going to be able to appeal to a higher power."

Dani took a good look at the other woman's figure and made a fatal error in judgment. "Then maybe should speak to the sugar daddy who's keeping you in business. I mean, you obviously didn't get this job for your customer service skills."

Those sounded like fighting words to Mary. "Didn't your mother ever tell you that you could catch more flies with honey than with vinegar?" she asked, putting her hands on her hips and glaring at the other woman.

It was not the best thing to say to Dani. "My mother is none of your business!" she shrieked.

It was a sore subject. Dani's birth mother had abandoned her after Ken Davis left the woman to go back to his wife.

"Fine then," said Mary. "But seriously, if you're new here, you really need to work on your people skills if you're going to start a business here. You're not exactly getting off on the right foot."

"Well, what else am I supposed to do? You're not giving me a room!" shouted Dani. "I thought the customer was always supposed to be right."

"No, the customer is not always right when the customer demands that I turn out another customer who already reserved a suite!" Mary countered. "Look, I'll be happy to find a room, but you have to understand that we're pretty much booked for the high school's graduation this weekend. There are a lot of people coming to see their kids graduate."

"Well, good for them, but I can't get anything less than a suite! I do have standards, you know," said Dani. "If you can't accommodate me, I'm just going to have to find another hotel."

"Good luck with that. There's no other hotels on the island," said Mary. "You'll have to just take yourself back to the mainland. Now, if you'd rather avoid that, I can find you a room here..."

"You're not listening to me!" Dani screeched, cutting the other woman off. "You're not doing anything that could possibly help me! I'm tired and hungry and my knee hurts because I was in a car accident last week! All I want is a place to stash my suitcases and nice, quiet with 800 thread count sheets so I can catch a nap and windows so I can get some fresh air!""

"I am listening to you!" Mary yelled back. "And really, if that's what you want, you don't need a fancy suite! If you really need that much room for your stuff, I can give you two double rooms. And whatever room you want to sleep in will have 1000-thread-count sheets, if you want. I'll even throw in an ice pack and free room service!"

"You're not, like, going to stick me in a windowless room in a basement?" asked Dani cautiously.

"No, because I have someone who might be interested in booking the basement for this weekend," said Mary.

"But if you're really that worried about finding a room that's comfortable, here's what I'll do. I have a two-bedroom suite that I'm living in. You can take my extra bedroom if you'd like. It's not that big since it was supposed to be a child's bedroom, but my long-distance engagement didn't work out and there's no chance of kids in my future. I also have a living room and balcony so you won't feel so cooped up. I'll even give you an extra room just for storage. And that way, you can see that I don't need a sugar daddy to run this place. Will that work?"

Dani was caught off-guard. "You would do that for me?" she asked. "Wow. That's really nice of you. I'll take it! But why are you doing this?"

"Because it sounds like you're going through a rough time with the car accident and everything, and I know what that can be like," said Mary. "Besides, you'll be a lot more comfortable in my spare bedroom than having to switch rooms in two days when all the graduation guests start arriving. Listen, I think we got off on the wrong foot and if it looks like we're going to be roommates, we should get to know each other. My name is Mary Connell, and I'm the owner of the Arms Hotel."

She extended her hand. "Danielle Davis, but my friends call me Dani. And yes, things have been kind of tough for me lately. Besides wrecking my car, I lost my job, sort of. My dad ran the family business into the ground before going to jail and it took a lot of work to make it profitable again. Then he got out of jail and took it away from me."

"Ugh!" said Mary, shuddering. "Yeah, I know what it's like to deal with a father like that. I testified against mine and he was acquitted, and then he was a taken out by the mob." Okay, it wasn't really a mob hit, but Mary wasn't going to confess to murder.

"What are you going to do with yourself now?"

"I'm trying to buy the stable in town," said Dani. "My family owns a major thoroughbred racing operation, but I recently lost my license with the California racing board. So I'm hoping that working with high school students will be enough to impress the racing board and get my license back."

"I think you'll like it here in Fandom," said Mary. "It's a good place for starting over. That's pretty much what I did after the whole mess with my dad."

"That's good to know," said Dani. "If you don't mind, I'd really like to get settled. The last few days have been exhausting."

"Of course! I'll get someone to take your bags upstairs, and here's your room keys," said Mary. "Let me run to the kitchen and get some ice and I'll show you where you'll be sleeping. And I can have Gunther bring you something to eat whenever you get hungry."

I wish I knew in advance which mornings I'm going to wake up with a killer headache so I can just post the night before.
