Mooby Land, post graduation

Jaina was doing her best to seem completely okay, which was helped by normal things like taking the new graduate boyfriend out to dinner. When she'd asked where he wanted to go, John's stipulation was that it had to be somewhere Dave wouldn't find him.

So they were at Mooby Land.

And now that Jaina had a chance to really look around the place for the first time, she said, "Yeah, there's no way I can see him coming here voluntarily."

"You'd better hope you're right or I'll be chasing pavement out of here quicker than you can say Mooby burger," John told her.

"That might be a little unnecessary," Jaina said slowly. "At least escape from the refesher window, save some face."

"I'll keep that in mind," John replied. "Everything feels like it's happening so fast this week."

"Yeah. Would have been nice of Fandom to at least make the week longer somehow. Work with us for once," Jaina grumbled.

"Yeah," John needed to fake some happy for her. "So, got through a whole ceremony without having to kill anything, that's a plus."

"True." Because Nancy didn't try to talk to her. "Though we'll see if Jamie survives the principal's wrath."

"It was a bold move," John grinned. "At least he had friends with him."

"Somehow I doubt that will help his case," she said. "But no one tried to catch any of them."

"Because they were naked," John reminded her. "I don't know how many people would own up to that."

She considered this. "In this town, I'm sure there's someone," she said.

"Let's just hope you're not related," he teased.

Jaina made a face. "Ew. You had to go there, didn't you?"

"Hey, you have more relatives on island right now than even the Winchesters," he stated, not knowing those numbers for sure.

She thought about this. "If we include Rory we're neck and neck," she figured. "Which is scary somehow."

"Mostly because your family is still back home," he considered.

"I don't actually have a big family, it just seems like it when they are all these alternate universe versions of it..." And trying to be smooth, she said, "You're lucky you just have the one."

"Lucky?" John raised an eyebrow. "Did you fall and hit your head getting off the bleachers?" He'd trade her families any day. Even with Anakin.

"Possibly," Jaina said. "I talked to Dave."

"You did what?" It was obvious the idea of this worried John a lot.

"We were both at Caritas last night, we talked," she said. "I think I got through to him."

"You got through to Dave?" John repeated, making sure he heard right. "What were you drinking?"

That wasn't the point. "I was honest with him," she said. "And I don't think he realized how he was coming off. He wants to talk to you."

He was trying to keep from being told he had to go home tomorrow, here. "Yeah, well, I'm not sure I want to do that just yet."

"I think it'll go better for you if you do it," Jaina told him. "He asked if you'd be open to compromise."

"And I'm hoping you told him no," John replied.

"I told him I didn't know," she replied. "He sounds willing to work with you, John, and I think you might end up screwing yourself over here if you take no attempt to even see him. What's the worst that happens, he tells you what we've already been thinking?"

"Yes, exactly that. I don't want to argue with him, I know how that story ends." With him going home tomorrow.

"Then don't go in there expecting to argue," Jaina advised. "He knows now that he comes off like an uncaring jerk, and he doesn't seem happy about that assessment. But I spent a good long time last night trying to convince him to give you some say in the matter, and if you want that, you might have to do a little work there yourself."

"You say that like you think I wouldn't try," John complained. "As much as the outcome is never in my favor, it's not as if I don't put out any effort." He just gave up after a certain point, that was different, right?

"You're avoiding him. That does sound a little like not trying," she countered.

"So you'd rather I chased him down on Thursday and found out I was leaving tomorrow and just gotten over it? Sorry, I didn't realize you were so anxious to be rid of me." Picking a fight seemed to be his way of coping.

Jaina frowned at him. "First, I am not anxious to be rid of you. At all. That's why I even tried to talk to him. Second, I didn't talk to him since yesterday, and I completely believe what you would have heard a different answer on Thursday than you will now. And now that you know, if you don't talk to him, then yeah, that is not trying. And if I'm going to keep making points, I'm not arguing with you tonight and I'm just going to tell you to trust me on this."

He crossed his arms and looked up because looking at her was not happening right then. "One conversation and you're an expert on my family? Figures, given you've decided on your own that we're not arguing. It's very like them."

"Don't do that," she said, shaking her head. "I'm trying to help. Not only that, but I think I did. Best case scenario, I'm taking you out to celebrate graduation. At worst, this is our last night and I'd really rather not spend it being compared to people you hate."

He rubbed his hands over his face and back into his hair. "You want me to talk to him, I can go now. Otherwise I can't talk about this with you."

Jaina pressed her lips together. If things worked out, there wasn't a problem. She just had to hope she wasn't making it all worse. "I think you should talk to him," she said.

"Okay then, you enjoy your dinner," he said, his sudden movement to stand rattling the table.

It was weird when she wasn't the one having the mini-fit. "Do you trust me?" she asked, looking up at him. She wasn't confident in the answer she'd get right now.

"Why?" No, now wasn't a good time to ask that question.

She paused.

"I'll see you later, John," Jaina said. "Congratulations on graduating."

"Yeah, I'm so glad," he muttered. "I'll try and stop by before..." He regretted it as soon as he said it and stopped and turned away.
