There was art, there was tea, there was...hardly anyone in the gallery and Charlotte trying to look like she was hard at work when really she was just shoe shopping online at the computer on the desk.

Just another day at the York Gallery, really.

Really, the interruption of visitors would be doing both Charlotte (and her bank account) a lot of good.

"Working hard?" Dale asked as he slipped a cup of coffee next to Charlotte and took a sip of his own.

And that would be Charlotte very quickly taking advantage of tabs by making some reviews on recent showings in New York be the first and foremost thing on her computer screen, before greeting Dale with a bright smile. "Of course!"

She easily reached for the offered coffee. "Thank you, sweetie."

"Looking for the next great artist?" Dale asked.

Or the next great heel...

"All part of the job description!" Charlotte said happily. "It sounds like there's a lot of really interesting exhibits popping up back home."

She felt it was a good blanket statement to cover the fact that she hadn't really been reading reviews; after all, there was always an interesting exhibit popping up back home.

"We can always go back for a weekend," Dale suggested taking a gulp of coffee and sighing in pleasure. "We can take in a show. Maybe even go shoe shopping."

"Dale." Charlotte gave him a little stern look. "Now you know that isn't fair, teasing me with shoe shopping..."

"Are you saying you could go to New York without going shoe shopping?" Dale teased.

"No," Charlotte laughed a little. "That's why it's not fair!"

"Well then let's just say it's for shoe shopping with an art show on the side," Dale joked.

"Dale," Charlotte said, attempting to switch into Very Serious Business, "now, you know I can't go and spend money on shoes because that's money we need to save up for the wedding."

"Of course, of course," Dale said relenting with a grin. "I completely understand. Did you want to have the wedding back in New York? We should probably try to find a location eventually."

"I want it somewhere nice," Charlotte said, smiling happily, very clearly settling into an area of discussion where she could stay for ages and be completely satisfied. Her eyes even sparkled a little as she turned all of her attention adoringly toward Dale. "Very classic. You know, if we really get to planning things, we could make it in time for a nice outdoor summer wedding..."

Not, of course, that she wanted to try to push toward something soon or anything. She just really liked weddings.

"I think a summer wedding is always good," Dale agreed. "Plus it's ususally easier for people to take time off for."

Eeee, he said a summer wedding is good! That meant it was definitely happen soooon! Charlotte barely contained her beaming. "It definitely has its fair share of benefits," she agreed. "And it can open up a lot of very flattering color schemes, Dale."

Dale chuckled at that. "I'll leave the color themes and decorations to you," he replied. "Whatever you need me to do, I'll be there to help."

Those words were almost as magical as the words of the engagement itself.

Charlotte was not going to stop beaming any time soon. "I'll let you know the minute something comes up. And if there's anything at all you do want a hand in and I'm missing it, you have to tell me. I want us to work on this together, sweetie."

"Well there is one thing I think we do need to discuss," Dale said seriously. "Charlotte... Are you happy here?"

Okay, so maybe it was going away sometime soon. Charlotte's expression dropped, and she blinked. "Wh...why wouldn't I be, Dale?"

Yeah, okay, she probably could have made that sound more convincing...

"Charlotte, I know this island isn't everyone's cup of tea," Dale replied. "This past year has been a trying one for you. And while I can cope with the issues this island throws at me, I don't want you to be unhappy as a result of staying here."

"No, no, no," Charlotte said, shaking her head and insisting way too much to be genuine. "It's fine! I mean, you're right, it's not...everyone's...cup of tea, but it's....it's fine!" She even tried a smile; the poorly veiled denial was strong with this one. "Just fine."

"Just promise me you'll think about it," Dale frowning a little before leaning over to kiss her on the cheek. "I want to know that more than everything you are happy with where you are."

"Oh, sweetheart," Charlotte smiled up at Dale. "As long as I'm with you, how could I not be happy?"

"I feel the same way," Dale grinned back at her. "But do you see us here for the rest of our lives? Raising children on this island?"

Oh, crap. He used the children card. Her biggest weakness! Charlotte's face twisted a little, nose wrinkling as she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

"Well," she said, brimming with reluctance, but unable to keep it in, "it isn't really...a....family type of place, Dale. I know Zoe Winchester's managing it just fine, but, well..."

I think that was the shortest post I've ever written.
