Magic Reserve - The Preserve, Wednesday Afternoon

"Hey, everyone," Tony said, once people had gathered. "We're going to talk about shielding today. Or defenses, in general, since everyone's magic is a little different. First, Karla's going to talk a bit about shields. Karla?"

Tony stepped aside and let Karla tag in speak and answer any questions.

Once she was done, Tony addressed the group again. "Who else feels comfortable enough with defensive magic to help others? Raise your hand, please?" Wow, he felt like a teacher or something. Way weird. Assuming there were hands up, he continued. "Okay, everyone else? These are the guys you go to for help."

"One last thing for today - let's talk strategy. Karla suggested that we find a few places on the island that are easy to defend and practice shielding those spots. Where do you guys think those places are? And what else can we do to make those spots ready for an invasion - like, maybe have food and first aid stuff staged there?"

Ronan nodded. "That's right," he said. "You know her, then? Did she have a picture?"

"Something like that," Karla agreed. She thought Dinah let everyone know she was a touch-telepath, but she couldn't really remember right now. Maybe it was the heat or the flowers or Ronan's really sexy smile, but Karla was having a difficult time thinking.

She dimpled at him. "Dinah was one of my cabinmates, and a very good friend."

Ronan nodded. "I didn't realise she had any photos of me," he said. "Oh, unless -- did she share a mental image, then?" He knew Dinah was pretty open, now, about her touch-telepathy, he'd heard her mentioning it at Fight Club.

"Mental image," Karla said with a nod. If he already knew about it, then she couldn't really get in trouble, now could she? "Are you a touch-telepath, too?" she asked, bring up her hand to skim his arm.

"No, but I can speak mind-to-mind with other telepaths," Ronan explained. "And with wizards from back home." His smile widened a bit as he felt Karla's touch, reaching out a tendril of thought. What about you? he asked her.

*I can hear and speak to anyone,* she sent with a smile. *Though I make it a rule not to poke around behind anyone's inner barriers. Don't know what I might find. People tend to misbehave when they think no one is looking.*

Well, Karla, Ronan said, laughing both mentally and aloud, as a famous ship's captain once said: "I am to misbehave."

*I've never heard of that one,* Karla sent, giving him an amused glance. *You'll just have to educate me. Who was this famous ship captain, and what exactly did he do? I shall need details.*

"It's from one of our fictional pieces," Ronan explained, switching back to speaking aloud. "A long-running series called Lightning Bug. The captain pretty much started a movement that would expose the government as corrupt. So, 'misbehaving' in this instance is... not perhaps the most appropriate metaphor."

"Lightning Bug? I'm seeing that movie tonight!" Karla exclaimed. "Though, you're right, that wasn't quite the way I'd been thinking about it." The saucy smile was in place again.

Ronan blinked. "Oh, are they playing it in town?" he asked. "It's been a while since I've seen it; I may go see it myself. Unless, of course, I'd be interrupting anything?" And that was, in fact, a saucy smile in kind.

"I going on a date tonight," she said, innocently.

Beat.

"With Eric van der Woodsen, for a school assignment. I'm not expecting anything interruption-worthy to occur."

"Eric? I don't think I've met him," Ronan admitted. "But what makes you so certain nothing interruption-worthy will happen? Just because it's an assignment, I mean. You never know what'll happen after."

"He likes other males," Karla said casually. "And I...don't like anyone," she said, as if by rote. But the pause in the middle suggested that her statement might not be accurate any more.
