Magic Reserve - The Preserve, Wednesday Afternoon

"Hey, everyone," Tony said, once people had gathered. "We're going to talk about shielding today. Or defenses, in general, since everyone's magic is a little different. First, Karla's going to talk a bit about shields. Karla?"

Tony stepped aside and let Karla tag in speak and answer any questions.

Once she was done, Tony addressed the group again. "Who else feels comfortable enough with defensive magic to help others? Raise your hand, please?" Wow, he felt like a teacher or something. Way weird. Assuming there were hands up, he continued. "Okay, everyone else? These are the guys you go to for help."

"One last thing for today - let's talk strategy. Karla suggested that we find a few places on the island that are easy to defend and practice shielding those spots. Where do you guys think those places are? And what else can we do to make those spots ready for an invasion - like, maybe have food and first aid stuff staged there?"

"That's a really good idea," Karla agreed. "I know several people who would appreciate that a lot. I was thinking of something similar with regular shields, too, as places for non-combatants to go during an attack. One person couldn't keep a shield like that up indefinitely, but between a group, it shouldn't be too bad. Plus, it means people get to practice their shielding. You know, when there aren't alligators around trying to spit biting fish at them."

"We could set up a rotation," Ronan agreed. "Every two weeks, perhaps, to renew the shields? Depending on who's all involved, and how long their shields will last." Ronan could, in fact, make shields that would last for much longer, if he was setting them on something, grounding them into walls, but that didn't preclude other people not being able to do that.

"That was what I was thinking. Several groups, to make sure there are several shielded areas available to people throughout the island. I can also add triggers, so if there is an emergency, the shields become activated properly." All of Karla's triggers required blood, but she figured that wouldn't be in short supply in an attack. "Unfortunately, unless we can figure out a way to let the shields recognize friend from foe, once a shield comes down, other people are going to have a hard time getting into the shelters. That's something we should work on, too."

"I could probably do something with my shields," Ronan said. "If not to differentiate friend-from-foe, perhaps setting up... captains? For each individual site. People the shields are keyed to recognise, who can trigger them shields and take them down as needed."

"That might be good, though we'd need back-ups. What if something happens to the captain, after all? Or perhaps someone from each site's group would need to head over to the shelters and keep an eye out? After all, that's where most of the noncombatants would be going, isn't it?"

"Back-ups is a good idea -- three people, maybe, designated as site-captains? Drawn from the support reserves?" Ronan had seen the posters in town, he figured it would be the best people to draw from.

"Probably best. Though with back ups from the magic and fighting reserves. We don't want to run off the invaders to find that they'd already managed to...harass the populace," she said, using the least offensive word she could think of in a situation like that.
