Magic Reserve - The Preserve, Wednesday Afternoon

"Hey, everyone," Tony said, once people had gathered. "We're going to talk about shielding today. Or defenses, in general, since everyone's magic is a little different. First, Karla's going to talk a bit about shields. Karla?"

Tony stepped aside and let Karla ~~tag in~~ speak and answer any questions.

Once she was done, Tony addressed the group again. "Who else feels comfortable enough with defensive magic to help others? Raise your hand, please?" Wow, he felt like a teacher or something. Way weird. ~~Assuming there were hands up,~~ he continued. "Okay, everyone else? These are the guys you go to for help."

"One last thing for today - let's talk strategy. Karla suggested that we find a few places on the island that are easy to defend and practice shielding those spots. Where do you guys think those places are? And what else can we do to make those spots ready for an invasion - like, maybe have food and first aid stuff staged there?"

Agnes finished the spell, and changed. No, there wasn't a flash, or a puff of smoke, or a shimmer, or anything. In fact, she didn't even look any different at all.

But now Agnes had transformed into a much more well-adjusted person who wasn't about to feel totally humiliated.

"No, I suppose shielding's all right for them as can do it," Agnes answered with a shrug. "You sure you're not wasting energy on the light show, though?"

"Positive, sugar," Karla said, her voice still sweet as honey-pears. "Perhaps the people where you are from are used to witches talking when they haven't anything to say--and have even less to back it up--but I'm Blood."

Were Karla more comfortable with this world's idioms, she would have ended with 'Bring it.' It was implied, however.

Internally, Karla launched herself into a controlled dive down to the level of the Sapphire, and readied herself to come up in a surge of Sapphire power.

She was going to be ravenous after all this.

"And blood is... thicker than water?" Agnes asked. She begun to adjust her hat, pulling out the hatpins and then sliding them home again very slowly. "Where I'm from, people are used to witches saying whatever they darn well -- damn well please."

"What?" Karla lost her supercilliously amused expression for a moment. "What does being Blood have to do with water?"

Mother Night, this girl was weird. Pity about the hairstyle, though. Karla had found it quite attractive.

Agnes shrugged. "It's an expression we have? Totally out of context, though. I haven't the slightest idea what you mean by 'Blood', to be honest, but it sounds awfully bigoted."

She really SHOULD back down. Should.

"Funny you should mention bigotry," Karla said, supercillious expression firmly back in place, "since the Blood are my people. Perhaps you shouldn't speak of things you don't know. Or would the pressures of remaining perpetually silent be a bit too much?"

"That was sort of my point," Agnes pointed out. "You made it sound like you think your blood are better than everyone else, and that's just not on."

"I was simply saying that the blood don't make comments unless we're willing to back them up. Nor am I claiming we're better than anyone else. Though perhaps...some," she said, giving Agnes a pointed glance. "Now were you planning on proving me wrong, or just amusing yourself with making snide remarks about things you haven't proven you can do. Either way, I'm sure I'll continue to be entertained."

"Actually, I thought I'd just stand here and glare at you a bit longer," Agnes replied. You can get back to your flash and show, if you'd like."

Karla just laughed. She liked this girl. It had been a while since anyone had given her lip in such an amusing fashion. "Sure. Take notes if you like. Once a witch has learned the bare basics of anything--you know, once she'd reached seven years of age or the like--she can work on style as well." She gave Agnes a condescending smirk. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll get there. With time. The trick is to not give up hope."

"Oh, I don't care much for style," Agnes replied. "You can keep that. I'll just continue to do what I can do, and what needs to be done, as best as I can do it."

"And I'm sure your best is...perfectly adequate," Karla responded in a doubtful-but-too-polite-to-say-so tone. "Kiss kiss."

Agnes grimaced and blew her a kiss.

Karla waved. "Practice hard, sugar!" The I'm sure you need it was silent, but heavily implied.

Then, in a sincere tone, she added, "You should put your hair the way it was. It was really cute."
