Atlas Gym, Wednesday, 6/03

Tyler spent most of his shift, in between the actual work bits, picturing gym patrons naked.

To be scrupulously fair, this wasn't exactly unusual. It was just that normally his mental wanderings were more New England Journal of Medicine -- he imagined lots of moles and goiters -- and less Playboy. But today his brain was all about the cut of sports bras and bike shorts and, hey, who turned up the heat in the gym?

It wasn't exactly unpleasant, though. He sat back and let his mind drift.

Veronica woke up from some very... interesting dreams... and decided to head over to the gym to hit the treadmill.

She wasn't expecting to see Tyler when she walked in.

"Hey," she said.

Well, that ruined that train of thoughts.

"Hey back," Tyler returned, sitting up. "Radio said you were on the island. Teaching, right?"

"Yup," Veronica nodded. "Just for the summer."

She set down her water bottle and towel and programmed the treadmill to start out at an easy pace.

"I heard you were teaching here as well?"

"I was," Tyler said, not at all leaning forward to watch her. Really. "Taking a break for the term to remind myself why I like teaching."

"Never would have pegged you as the teacher type," Veronica admitted.

Maybe he wasn't as bad as she thought.

"Yeah, well, life changes," Tyler said, a little vaguely. "I ran into a bad patch and Fandom was hiring, about a year ago."

He held up a hand. "Not any kind of bad patch you need to bother yourself about."

What? He knew Veronica.

"Sounds like you've matured a lot since I last saw you."

He'd certainly put on some nice muscle... wait, she wasn't paying attention to that at all.

Jack nodded at the kid. "It's not polite to stare, you know."

Obviously, he thought he was being MUCH more subtle with his own leering.

Tyler's answering grin barely pretended to remorse. "I'm not staring," he lied. "Just ... keeping an eye on things."

Especially things in fitted spandex.

Jack raised an eyebrow. "Yeaaaaah. And you're also an astronomer, right? Observing heavenly bodies?"

He threw a few more jabs at the punching bag. What he really wanted to do was move on to the free weights, but that would mean needing someone to spot, and that way lie the beginnings of way too many bad pornos.

"... why not?" Tyler said, shrugging because it wasn't like things could get worse. "I'm Tyler. Friendly neighborhood gym monkey."

He looked around. "The scenery always this nice?"

"Air force," Tyler repeated, raising one hand, then "boat," raising the other. He made a face indicating the concepts didn't go together to him, then shrugged. "I guess? Usually I don't notice it as much. I think everybody brought out their spandex today."

"A fishing boat," Jack clarified. "I just bought it. People aren't allowed to be off-duty every now and then?"

Ghanima lifted a hand to wave to Tyler on her way out of her NPC-run aerobics class. "Picking up extra shifts?" she asked. "If you're that bored, I'll let you write my lesson plan."

"It's my normal shift," Tyler said, trying to not let his eyes linger on the way Ghani's workout clothes stuck to her form. "But it's a lot less boring since you got here."

... wow, that was lame.

"Do you use that line on all the girls, or just the ones who are actually willing to entertain you?" she asked, putting her hands on her hips. "Really, Durden, you can do better than that."

"I know, I know," Tyler said, looking rather put out with himself. "So if I told you you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?"

She had to know he didn't mean that seriously.

"No, but I might be willing to throw you around a practice room to help you clear your brain," Ghani said sweetly. "Maybe if you hit your head again, it will clear up this problem you seem to be having."

"The only problem I have is that I lost my phone number," Tyler said. "Can I have yours ... and what the hell is wrong with me, Ghanima?"

"I thought you had my phone number. I am in the teacher's directory," she pointed out. "I have no idea. Did you eat anything strange today?"

Jack had come to the gym to get away from his empty room and his thoughts of Mary Steenburgen and, well, Carter, but... Well, he hadn't been expecting all the NPCs in their spandex.

He attacked a punching bag with ferocity, trying to calm the hell down.
