The Arms Hotel; Wednesday [ 06/03 ].

The day to be had at the Arms Hotel today was going to be an awkward one. Valentine had made the mistake of bringing her German book from the library with her, which instantly prompted Gunther to seize on the opportunity to speak in German (and nothing but) to Valentine and insist that she talk back to him in only German, as well, otherwise du erlernen nichts.

This in and of itself would not have been problematic if it weren't for the fact that what Gunther wanted to talk about was cooking. Particularly what he was cooking today...

Today's Special:
Bratwurst with Spicy Mustard
Wiesswurst
Knackwurst und Kraut

So this meant that Valentine was being subjected to a man talking about nothing but the juiciness and size of his sausages, while waving them about for her to see. After last night's licorice conversation, it didn't take long at all for Valentine to just pretty much want this whole awkward business over. To think she'd only just got there, too.

The Arms Hotel is open!

She's desperate for an interruption anyway.

"Val."

Ender was happy to provide an interruption, especially since he'd rather avoid whatever was striking Fandom this time. It made his skin itch, and his brain fizzle; he didn't like it.

"Ender."

Valentine wasn't entirely sure her brother was the choice form for an interruption from a very excitable German waving his sausages around to take right now, but for all she knew it was probably the best. Brows furrowed, she sent a worried help me glance toward him before flipping a few pages and giving a stuttering, "Nein, Gunther. Ahh...mein Bruder..." Flip, flip. "Geschäft, Gespräch jetzt....bitte?"

Her distressed expression then turned hopefully on Gunther. He muttered something about her schreckliche Grammatik, sighed, waved another sausage for good measure, and then went to go do some actual cooking of it.

"Oh good God."

"Long day?" Ender asked, leaning on her counter. He smiled at her, the curve of her hair as familiar to him as any dream he'd had. It was still otherworldly to have her here, even if he knew the implications.

At least now he could breathe.

"He's a little excitable."

Valentine sighed a little again, but she relaxed in her chair for the first time practically all day, unable to help a faint smile across the desk.

"It's a little brother now," she said.

And then instantly shook her head. "Better," she corrected the slip and gave a short, oddly embarrassed laugh. "Sorry. Learning two new languages has left me a little tongue tied, I guess."

Pity Freud was Austrian, and not German. Would have made it even better.

Or worse, depending which one of them you asked. Their senses of humor had slightly different bents, although Ender supposed he would have appreciated some of the irony.

"Just as long as you don't trip up when it's a guest of actual importance," Ender told her, "Don't go around calling anyone else brother. I might get jealous."

He didn't do jealous very well, but the words seemed to fit.

Valentine kept her grin at that, ducking her head slightly. But there was a dry, sarcastic irony in her smirk. "Good thing Peter's too busy ruling the world for high school, then."

Very ironic.

"Serves him right," Ender deadpanned.

"Yeah, no kidding," Valentine answered back, and she leaned a little on her elbow on the front desk. She tilted her head thoughtfully at her little brother for a moment.

"I wish I saw you around more," she found herself saying. "You're too good at disappearing."

"I'm around all the time," Ender replied, leaning on the desk himself with the vague beginnings of a smile on his face. "Ask anyone at the play. I'm quite the socialite."

Valentine lightly returned the grin . "So that's why I've run into maybe all of five people who know your name. Maybe I've been looking in all the wrong places. Who'd have guessed you were a theatre geek?"

"I'm still waiting for my glasses," he said.

Then, after a beat: "Or is that the wrong stereotype? For a high school student, I still seem to have trouble keeping them apart."

"I think that'd be more computer geek that theatre geek," Valentine said. "You need a scarf for theatre geek. Maybe a lisp."

"I suppose I could try a lisp before my voice well and truly breaks," he said, thoughtfully.

"Come on, you're an actor now. Should be a sinch. Runs in the family."

But then again, what didn't?

Mental health?

"I think I'll save it for my performance," Ender said, thoughtfully. "I do have a tyrant to deal with. Suppose it would be too method to imagine it's someone we know?"

Anything actually consequential, then.

"It'd give me a little something extra to look for from the audience, though," Valentine pointed out.

"I don't expect to become part of the amorphous blob of the stage," Ender replied, amused.

"Sounds like you're setting yourself up there, Ender," Valentine noted with a quirked eyebrow.

"And I know I'm not going to be disappointed."

"I'm not setting myself up," he replied. "I could put on a bright red hat and it would have the same result."

He shrugged lightly. "So what have you been up to?" His fingers brushed across the desk.

Valentine was about to give Ender a look because he knew that wasn't what she meant, but the fingers across the desk distracted her.

"Absolutely nothing of consequence," she admitted.

"I doubt that," Ender said. "I'm sure you've been making the rounds." He tilted his head at her, questioning, amused.

"Like I said," Valentine said, returning a smile. "Nothing of consequence. I'm learning German and Chinese, though, and, in exchange, enlightening a mind to the great philosophical minds of our century."

"Demosthenes?"

Valentine grinned. "Who else?"

"I always took you for a Platonic girl," he said, skimming his fingers over to find hers, now.

Was that...yes, Ender's fingers had found hers, and Valentine smiled a little, as her fingers gave his a little squeeze. "Most people do."

Gunther will be happy to tell you about his sausage...

My brain and I? We have a very love/hate relationship right now.

*snerk* Poor, poor Valentine.
