Chamomile. Energy in action.

It was totally not her fault that chamomile was actually used as a relaxant to help make people sleep, and she was definitely not going to complain about the meaning and the use being so far different from each other.

Really, Ino was sort of used to that. It was amusing. She hummed, back to full energy and having dealt with her bruises, and almost danced around the shop as she inspected all of the flowers.

"I have nothing to do these days," Romeo said, which must have seemed so flattering to Ino. But he did accompany it with a smile and the offer of a cup of coffee. "Hello."

"Romeo! Should my feelings be hurt?" Ino asked, because that was a mite off-putting though the smile/coffee combo made up for it. She cheerfully claimed her coffee. "Or should I be delighted that I'm considered good enough to be something to do?"

"Isn't it always a delight to be in each other's company?" Romeo asked, still seeming cheerful. "I should be sad if you thought otherwise, Ino. Though I wouldn't phrase it as 'something to do,' not after the last week."

"I missed last week," she said, peering over her coffee at him. "What's wrong with my sentence? It sounds okay to me? And, totally, fun company, but geez."

"Something to do," Romeo repeated, and if she still didn't get it he couldn't help her. "I spent part of last week thinking every girl here was infinitely more attractive than I'd ever suspected. I had to mention Jeff to stop thinking improper things about Turtle."

Not that Turtle was hideous or anything, but, really, not Romeo's type.

"Why'd you miss it?"

"Girls are not something, they're someone," she said severely, mulling over that. "Hurley said something 'bout it, like, being in the water--being attracted to people."

She shrugged a bit.

"Had a mission." Ino tugged at her hair. "Lucky for me I managed to skip the lectures 'bout being all bruised and stuff." It was probably easier to keep escaping those lectures if you didn't mention anything. Ah well.

"I know girls are someone, Ino," Romeo sighed, letting it go. "Hurley wasn't wrong, anyhow."

He frowned at her. "Are you bruised? Or do you just mean in theory you could have been?"

She wriggled her fingers at him. "I was bruised," Ino clarified. "But I'm not any more. Yesterday was rather icky though."

"... how 'icky'?" And that was Romeo's suspicious look, right there. He didn't like Ino getting hurt no matter how much he knew she could more than take care of himself.

"Uh." Probably not reassuring. "I was totally mobile?"

Of course, she had a higher pain tolerance than most people, but Ino was hoping Romeo didn't know that.

"And totally okay today! See!" She did a little spin for him.

"I see," Romeo said skeptically. "And I know you heal, too."

He didn't want to argue with her about this, so he folded his arms on the counter and rested his chin atop them. "Was it worth it?"

[Himself in my last ping should be herself. WTF, random gender change?]

Ino blinked at him, caught off-guard. "Worth it?"

It had been a mission, that was her job.

[Hahahaha! I didn't even notice, ow. Shows my reading comprehension today! Plz don't change Ino's gender, she get's cranky! Heee.]

"What you had to do that got you all bruised," Romeo said, concern flickering through his eyes. "Did you do something that needed to be done?"

Ino considered that, leaning against the counter and tapping the edges with one hand. "We were paid to do it?" she tried. "So it doesn't really matter how important it was to us--it was important enough to the client to shell out the money, and once it was accepted into the mission scrolls, we have to do it or we're going back on the contract. So, I guess it needed to be done in that sense?"

"If you've made a promise it needed to be done," Romeo agreed. "Though you make it sound as if you didn't see much point to it, yourself, beyond the contract."

Ino frowned. "That's not it," she said, struggling for words. "It was a mission, and the mission during the mission is everything?"

Romeo wasn't going to understand, and he wasn't being intentionally obtuse. "I don't get it," he admitted. "It's a mission, so you don't have an opinion on whether it's a good or bad thing to do at all?"

It was more a case of severely different world views and cultures than anything else. Not that that was going to stop Ino from trying to explain it.

"No," she said, tugging at her hair. "I mean, we've got opinions. But they--don't matter. On a mission, you do the mission, and you go home at the end of it and no one cares what you did on the mission because it was a mission."

"... so should I not ask?" Romeo asked slowly. "You're here and you're mobile and that's what matters?"

She glanced at him, and shrugged a bit. "It's up to you, whether you want to ask or not," Ino said honestly. "So far, though, I don't think my missions are much that you'd take issue to. I mean, it's just--right or wrong isn't so important in my world."

Ino's world was strange, Romeo thought, and he still didn't understand. He shoved his hair out of his face as if that would help.

"So if they told you to poison a nursery full of babies, you could do that and not feel any particular way about it, if it were a mission?"

ANBU handled missions like that, and she knew she was likely to wind up there when she got the rank needed.

"I'd do it," she said, staring at him. "I probably wouldn't care about it much while on the mission. It doesn't mean that after I wouldn't be sick about it, or that I wouldn't have nightmares for years about it, but I'd do it because that's what my Hokage wanted me for, and that's more important than my own issues or not with the mission. I'd get the job done."

Romeo had no idea what to say to that; he just looked at Ino in horror.

He wasn't sure how they'd gotten down this path, and he wished they hadn't.

She met his eyes steadily.

"You asked," Ino told him simply. Don't ask if you don't want answers.

"I did," Romeo agreed, a little glumly. "Can I ask you something?"

It was related. Maybe only to him, but it was.

Ino would totally take glum over him fleeing the shop in horror. Being honest with your friends sucked sometimes, but Ino... didn't care for lying, if she didn't have to, most of the time.

Not about the important things.

"You're on a roll," she said, "go ahead."

"Do you think there's a God who you'll have to answer to after you die?"

Romeo knew there was one, for him. He thought the answer would most likely be that he was going to Hell.

"No," she said, with another shrug. "There's gods, and Gods, but most Konoha shinobi only believe in the Will of Fire and that's more of a promise than anything else."

"And if there's no God, there's no promise of a judgment beyond that of your Hokage and your group," Romeo said. "That ... explains quite a bit."

And it made him sad.

"There's some gods," she repeated, frowning at him. "My family doesn't follow any of them, and you wouldn't be sad if you knew what some of the religions were."

Uh. Yeah. Jashinism, for instance, involved human sacrifice. Ino kept her mouth shut, for the moment on that.

"Why would we want someone judging our actions? Only children need babysitters."

"We're all children," Romeo said impatiently. "I'm not about to drag you off to a church, I know no one here shares my religion, but against God we're all wayward children."

"I wasn't saying you were," she retorted. "Just that I don't get it--why would anyone want someone watching over them, judging them, and then probably find them wanting because people aren't, you know, all that great?"

"Because it's not a question of wanting or not wanting -- He's there no matter what you or I or anyone else says, even when He's inconvenient. Even when He hates us."

He bit his lip. "At least, it's never seemed a choice to me."

Ino was. . . looking skeptical.

"What's the point of him then?" she asked, one hand on her hip. "I mean, who decided that he was staring down at you and judging you no matter what? Why would he want to?"

Romeo made an impatient gesture. "I -- Ino, I'm going to take a walk."

He couldn't explain it. It just was. He was homesick.

She glanced at him, and shrugged. "Suit yourself."

Ino couldn't say she was sorry when she didn't even understand what the problem was.

"No one here understands it and I can't talk about it properly, I get tangled up," Romeo said, trying to explain. "Just -- forget it."

Painfully homesick, now.

"The door," she said, almost gently, "is that way."

Ino didn't have much tact, but she wasn't so cruel (in her current mood) to rub his face, like an errant puppy, in the fact that that was how she felt when people started acting like she was a monster for the way her world worked.

Somehow, Ino felt the comparison would sit badly with him.
