Cafe Fina - Wednesday, 6/10

Last night's radio broadcast had spurred him back into dealing with the more complex dishes as he decided that he'd have to figure out something he could make for Arthur to shut him up about what a 'girl' he was for cooking. The dishes and plates looked on in a bit of amazement and the pots practically vibrated on their stovetops as he started putting things together.

Shilo decided to stop into the Cafe for a quick lunch. Especially after seeing the specials board. She spotted Liir behind the counter. "Hi Liir, long time no see," she said, smiling. "What's a Coquilles St. Jacques?"

"Sea scallops," he explained as he peeked out from the kitchen, "in a cream sauce with cheese. Very good. Even I like them and I'm not much for seafood."

He put down what he was working on and gave her a smile.

"Hello, Shilo. Sorry. Work."

"No big deal," she said, with a shrug. "Um... I've never had sea scallops. I guess I'll go with the chicken, then. To go, please." She grinned. "I'm working today as well."

"I'll make you the chicken and give you one of the scallops to try," he said with a faint smile, "my treat. And I can have that for you in a bag in just a moment. Would you like some lemonade while you're waiting?"

"Sure!" she replied. "I haven't had lemonade in forever. Do you make it really sweet, or tart with just a little sweetness?"

"Tart with just a little bit of sweetness," he told her honestly. He also made it with a touch of lavender, but that was more of an accent than anything.

"I can sweeten it for you if you like."

"Please don't," she replied. "My father used to make it that way, and that's the way I love it."

He nodded and brought out a cold glass of soft purple (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Amys-Lavender-Lemonade/Detail.aspx) glass of lavender lemonade.

"Should be out in a moment."

She sipped, and looked at the glass. "What else do I taste?" she asked. "It's... floral, I think. Is there rosewater in this?"

He shook his head.

"Lavender," he explained before ducking back into the kitchen.

"Ohhh," Shilo replied, tasting it again. "This is really good, Liir. Do you think of this stuff all on your own?"

He shook his head with a smile.

"No, but I think of some of it. You read enough cookbooks and theory books and books on fat and bones and meat and vegetables and cooking styles and you can't really claim anything but the dish itself."

"That's really cool," she replied. "I kept bugging my father to teach me how to cook, but we never got the chance."

"My mother didn't cook," he said as he boxed up her food, "which is why I learned. Nanny couldn't do much more than cube cheese with her shaking hands by the end."

"Well, it's a good talent to have," Shilo replied, sensing... something in his tone that made her opt to not ask about his mother. "And at least you get the chance to practice it here."

"I certainly do," he said with a smile at her while he put the box of food in a bag.

"I put a jar of the lemonade in there as well for you," he told her as he walked out with it.

Shilo looked in the bag. "Really? Thanks, Liir! I appreciate it." She handed him some money to cover the bill. "Keep the change, it's your tip," she told him. Actually, it was money to cover the lemonade and the tip, but she was hoping he wouldn't figure that out until she was long gone. "I'll see you around." With that, and a wave, she was out the door, humming to herself and almost skipping.

Though if you'd point that out, she'd deny it up and down.
