Chilly Boulder, Thursday evening

With the weather being nice, Zayne felt that an ice cream date would work pretty well. Places with menus that weren't just displayed on a big board on the wall were probably too serious for a date like this. Plus, the Force had provided warm weather, so how could they resist the lure of frozen dairy products?

Anyway, Zayne and Sookie were here.

"Do they even have ice cream where you're from?" Sookie wondered, fiddling with the dress (http://www.edressme.com/s961.html) she'd selected (and thankfully not consulted Claudia about.)

"No, we don't," Zayne said. "Pretty much all of the popular foods here are things we don't have in my galaxy."

"But you've had it before?" she checked curiously.

"I've been here for long enough to try most of the food places," Zayne said. Well, the cheaper ones, at least. The stipend for Padawans was not great. "It's part of my whole cultural investigation thing."

"Good excuse to just eat all the good stuff our planet has to offer," she said, smiling. "So, got a favorite flavor, or did you only try it the once?"

"Do you have any suggestions?" Zayne asked.

"I like butter pecan, myself. Mint chocolate chip's pretty good, too. Really, anything with chocolate, chips or otherwise, is a great big plus," she said thoughtfully. "But then you've probably been here long enough to figure that one out."

"That didn't take long to realize," Zayne admitted. "I think I'll go with the mint chocolate chip since it comes so highly recommended."

"Also," she added, "it's green."

Sometimes, Sookie said slightly inane things.

"I mean, it's a pretty shade of green! And, you know, ice cream doesn't seem like something that would lend itself well to colors like green or blue."

"I'm not so sure about that," Zayne said. "After all, we do have blue milk where I come from. Blue ice cream might even seem normal to me."

"What kind of animal has blue milk?" Sookie asked, deeply intrigued. "Is it like normal -- sorry, I mean, milk like what we got here? Just blue? Does it color your tongue blue?"

"Banthas, pretty much, other animals give milk that's different colors, including white, and it will kind of coat the tongue for a couple minutes," Zayne answered. "Any other questions?"

"Only what a bantha looks like," she admitted, blushing. "Sorry, I'm just curious."

"They're huge furry things, giant horns..." Zayne described. "I've never actually seen one, personally. But they're the hairiest farm animals you could ever imagine."

"Like sheep you could milk?" she wondered. "I mean, I guess people use sheep's milk some places in the world, but that's a little exotic for Bon Temps."

Zayne knew what sheep were. Apparently they had them in his galaxy. "Kind of, only much, much bigger and brown. What's Bon Temps?"

"My hometown," she explained easily. "Little bitty place in North Louisiana. It means 'good times' in French, but nothing ever happens there."

"That's not always a bad thing," Zayne said. "At least you've never had to deal with monster attacks like you have here, right?"

"Not so's you'd notice. We've never even seen a vampire. S'far as I know, the only unusual thing about that town is yours truly, and they all think I'm crazy anyway," she said with a quick smile.

"So with you here, it's extra boring there?" Zayne checked.

"Oh, they'd probably disagree with me, but yeah. I mean, the only thing they're missing is someone to read their thoughts and call them on their hypocrisies," she replied, shrugging. "And I'm pretty sure that 'miss' isn't the right verb to use, then."

"It's still a brand of excitement that they're not getting at all," Zayne said. "Now they're going to have to hope for a genuinely crazy person to come along and fill the gap."

"We've got one of those, too, but Terry's harmless. He mostly just mutters to himself and his dogs," she offered. "Hopefully they aren't picking on him in my absence."

"May the Force be with him," Zayne said sincerely. "Of course, if they heard me saying that, they'd probably start picking on me instead."

"Probably. Not the nicer people, anyway," she assured him. "I mean, my family and best friends at home are used to what I can do, and all. My gran just says people're scared of what they don't understand, and I'm a big question mark."

"Personally, I think you're pretty easy to understand," Zayne said. "You're a sweet girl with a special power. Then again, I'm probably just too used to things like this."

Sookie blushed just a little, but shrugged. "Thanks, but I think we're all kinda used to it, you know? From living here."

"I think there are still some people who haven't adjusted, but the point is taken," Zayne said.

"Maybe the new ones," she said, shrugging. "It didn't take me too long. There's almost no learning curve, really."

"That's pretty much who I meant," Zayne said. "I'm sure some people take longer than just a month and a half to really get used to it."

"Even with those gators? And the...um, amorous week? And all the other strange things that happen?" she wondered.

"Pretty much anything is possible," Zayne said earnestly.

"If I didn't, I would have given up with trying to be a Jedi years ago," Zayne said.
