Detention, The Gig, 8 Am to 2 PM, Saturday

Dani was waiting out front with a list of the students who had to report to detention. The door to the barn was open, and just inside, there was a wheelbarrow and an assortment of pitchforks visible.

"Good morning. My name is Miss Davis and I've been asked to oversee your detention today," she began. "You're going to help me give The Gig a top-to-bottom cleaning. I'm sorry to say that you are going to get very, very dirty in the process." She went on to explain the basics of mucking out horse stalls, cleaning tack, and grooming horses.

"I've provided gloves and rubber work boots for you, and I suggest you change put them on before you begin," added Dani. "And just a word of warning, folks. If any of you brought steel-toe boots thinking that would protect your feet from getting stepped on by a horse, forget it. When a 1000 lb animal steps on a steel toe, that steel is going to give way and bend under the weight, and it won't bounce back afterwards. Your precious little toes are still going to be stuck underneath it."

Satisfied that she had sufficiently scared the students, Dani led them into the stable to get to work.

Leda still wasn't sure why she'd gotten detention. Seemed to her it'd be easier to stop doing whatever it was she was doing wrong (or work harder at not getting caught) if she knew what it was.

Dani couldn't help snickering when she overheard Peyton's comment. "Nope, not kidding. Believe it or not, there are people who do this kind of stuff just to work with the horses."

Claudia looked horrified. "Oh. My. God. Mallory was the one with the horse obsession," she said. "And those shoes are ugggggly."

"The shoes may be ugly, but once you see what you'll be stepping in, you'll be happy to have them," said Dani with a smirk.

Muck Out Stalls

Shovel out soiled bedding from the stalls, dump it in a wheelbarrow, and then wheel the whole mess outside. It's not going to look or smell very nice. Just be careful not to stab yourself with a pitchfork.

Dani ignored the muttering as she checked on Peyton's work. "Not bad. Just be sure to use the broom to get the corners before you start putting down fresh straw," she said.

"Ewwwwwwwwwww," Claudia squealed, the most ineffective stall mucker of all time. "This is groooooooosss."

Leda went about the job stoically. She'd helped clean out Castle Pup so she and the others could live there. This wasn't so bad.

Clean Tack

Grab a bucket of soapy water, a sponge, and something to sit on while you scrub saddles. Not much fun, but it's a good time to catch your breath and chat after cleaning out the stalls.

Dani's not totally heartless. She ordered a moddable catered lunch from Il Pollo for the students.
