Had someone learned that there was now an actual hat shop in town, and was someone humming her way about her own shop wearing a completely impractical only-worn-once-to-the-races hat of her own in celebration of that fact?

Someone had, and someone was, yes.

Someone's outdoor sign was appropriately obscured with tiger-lily blossoms until it looked like it said what it was supposed to say, and the window sign read, as usual:

Biff popped into the shop On a Mission. "Hello!"

"Mister...Biff." Who had let her believe certain things about pastries, and yet was still five times as charming as that Deadpool chap. "Welcome to my shop. May I help you find something?"

"I'm looking to send a tree to someone," Biff said. Like that was a normal request or something. "Do you have any suggestions?"

"A...tree." Why should she be surprised, really? "How large of a tree, and to whom? What sort of message are you intending to convey?"

"That I am superior in every way to a man who just sends flowers," Biff decided.

Eliza wasn't sure whether to be impressed with the man's style, or insulted that he thought there was something superior to flowers. She decided to go with impressed. For the moment.

"Perhaps a flowering tree?" she suggested. "For the best of both worlds."

"Oooh," Biff said. "I hadn't thought of that. There aren't a lot of, well, things that grow, where I was born."

"In the city?" Eliza asked, since it was her first thought for places where things don't grow. She pulled out the catalog from which she'd ordered Mister Tully's seeds as she spoke, flipping through the slick pages to the section on trees.

"In the middle of a desert," Biff replied. "Well, except when Josh peed."

Thanks for that, Biff.

"...Was Josh some sort of elephant or camel?" She really couldn't think of anything else that could make a desert not a desert just by doing that.

Biff, don't answer.

"No, he was the Son of God."

Eliza, you were warned.

Sigh. "Of course he was. Pull the other one. It's got bells on." She shook her head and pointed to a catalog page. "Perhaps a magnolia?

"That would be lovely," he decided. "Does it make a good apartment tree?"

"It seems so. You can keep it indoors," Eliza answered, and yes, she was reading from the catalog. Raising trees inside was a bit out of her experience. "Or put it out on a balcony or patio when the weather's fine."

"Fantastic," Biff said. "I'd like to send one to Detective Constable Day."

"To Daisy?" Eliza laughed as she pulled out an order form and began writing down the details. "I'll ask for an extra nice one, then."

"I appreciate it," Biff replied, smiling. "I don't think it really needs a card, do you?"

Eliza paused to look up at him. "I think she might twig on her own, at that."

I love that HAT. it is a HAT. an honest-to-Aretha HAT.

I'm gonna have the Ascot Gavotte in my head ALL DAY NOW, THANKS.
