Another crate arrived this morning and Irulan helped unpack. She took out one hat that caught her eye.

"I think Wensicia would like this," Irulan declared.

Hats! Alice couldn't help poking her head inside the store to look at all of them. They were large and strange and eccentric. And Alice adored a good, loud sort of hat.

"Hello," Alice said brightly. "You have quite smashing hats. I do hope this store is new, or I've missed them previously, and that would be a shame."

One way to really win Irulan's heart was to compliment her hats. She beamed, or as much a reserved princess could beam. "Thank you, and yes, I just recently opened."

"I've only a few hats," Alice admitted, "and it seems there aren't enough occasions for them, are there? One can hardly wear a really spectacular hat around on a Tuesday without getting strange looks. Then again, one can simply ignore the strange looks."

"One can ignore," Irulan said, a voice of experience and smiled. "Although I did receive a large number of odd looks when I wore my hats but after the initial awkward questioning things went smoothly after."

"Perhaps we should declare a Hat Day," Alice said. "One day for everyone to wear their most outrageous, wonderful hats. Or at least I should start wearing my own hats more frequently. The more of us wearing them, the less strange it looks, I suppose."

"I like the idea of Hat day," Irulan said. In Irulan's opinion everyone should wear hats. "Everyone should wear hats, the grander, the better!"

Dinah came up after she and Jill had thoroughly explored their hat options, with the Blitzen and one of the little red hats. "Hi! I'd like to buy these, and, um." Of course she recognized her immediately, but how weird a way was that to introduce herself? I saw you in someone else's memories? "You're Irulan Atreides, right? Princess Irulan?"

Irulan looked-up, surprised. She was certain she didn't know the young lady.

"Yes, I am," Irulan confirmed with a nod. "I am the Princess Irulan." She tilted her head slightly, "I take it that you know one of my stepchildren?"

"Both of them, actually. Professor Atreides is my teacher and my tutor, and Leto's a good friend." Dinah beamed at her. "I'm Dinah. Lance. Um, did you ever get that sparkly hat that Professor Atreides was going to send you?"

Because she'd love to see Irulan actually wearing it.

"Yes, indeed!" Irulan's smile was wide, deciding on the spot she quite liked Dinah Lance. "I have received that gift. I am most thankful! Perhaps I shall wear it one of these days."

"We all had to wear versions of that hat for a whole day around here," Dinah told her, then paused. "Um. Did Professor Atreides warn you... what this place is like?"

"She didn't need to," Irulan answered. "I went to this school when I was younger. I'm very aware of this island's... strangeness. I remember a time when one my hats turned into a pie." She paused. "I think I am still cross about that, I liked that hat!"

"Ohh! Right, Leto mentioned that, I forgot." Dinah shook her head, then laughed. "Really? What kind of pie? And did you eat it? I think I would've been worried that it'd change back into silk or flowers or whatever."

Dinah and Jill had been looking around that afternoon, planning on shopping for fun stuff. Stopping outside the shop, Dinah blinked. "I think this is Leto's stepmom's place. Want to check it out?"

Dinah grinned, and said, "Leto's a he, and I think he was in your cabin, but maybe not?" She gave the shop a yearning look. "C'mon. Can you get girlier than this without being diamonds and fingernail polish? Or diamond fingernail polish?"

"He might have been in my cabin," Jill admitted. "I don't know. I kind of fail. Leto's a he? But--mythology!" Jill flailed a little. "I could use some hats," she mused, tugging on a strand of her still-way-too-short hair. "Let's do it."
