Wellspring Arms & Meditation Center, Wednesday

It’d be a bit weird, she felt, to turn the radio up and sing in a gun shop. So Ino wasn’t singing, exactly, and the radio was only on a wee bit—just enough for Ino to hum along to as she inspected all of her flowers and plants in the shop.

That done, she stretched, and flopped down in Cable-san’s chair to study a scroll. That wasn’t on medicine for once.

Who really wouldn't mind.

Veronica needed some shooting practice before her next trip to Langley, so Sarah had ~~handwavily~~ arranged to meet her at the range.

"Hi," Sarah said, as she approached the counter with Veronica. She grinned at the girl from her class. "I didn't realize you worked here, Ino. I should be on the cleared list for the shooting range, and Veronica is with me."

She already had a hand in her bag, ready to pass over her ID if needed.

"For almost two years now," Ino said, grinning a bit as she tugged out the list of people allowed. "And that's awesome that you want to use the range, and nothing personal, but I'll need photo ID for you and Veronica, please."

Veronica took her driver's license out of her purse and handed it over. "Will this suffice?"

Sarah passed over her CIA badge and a permit to carry a concealed weapon. "It's good you guys have safeguards on this," she remarked. "I wouldn't trust everyone here with a real gun."

"That'll do," she told Veronica, taking the license to jot down the details and double-check the photo. "You're not on the list already, so Cable-san'll want the details."

Checking Sarah's ID, Ino grinned at her as she handed the IDs back. "Well, it's a bit hard with all the different worlds, but he definitely tries to make sure no one gets any weapon they're not responsible enough for and guns are so easy to abuse."

"That's fine," Veronica said. "Safety protocols are important. I don't have my own gun; are there weapons I can use here?"

She wondered if she needed to buy a gun or if the CIA would provide her with one.

If she asked Sarah, Sarah might stare a little and ask if her father made the police in Neptune buy their own guns.

"I might have a spare if you don't have loaners," she said, albeit reluctantly. She didn't want to loan out her spare -- nothing personal, it was just one of her favorite guns.

"We've got a few," Ino said, smiling slightly.

Even if most people did use their own guns.

"What's your preference?" she asked Veronica. "And I can check if we've got one for using."

"Probably a .22," Veronica said. "I don't do well with big guns."

"Something similar to mine would be good," Sarah added, flashing her own .22.

"Should be good," Ino said cheerfully, slipping from behind the counter with the keys. "If you'd follow me, we'll get you set up right away."

"Great, thanks," Veronica said, following Ino as instructed.

Sarah followed along obediently, gun back in its holster.

Ino unlocked the door, and gestured for them to step inside. "You've been here before," she said to Sarah, "so you know where the protective equipment is, if you need it. Guns, though, are this way."

Slipping over to the side, she unlocked a cabinet. ".22, right?"

Veronica nodded. "Yes, please, if you have one. If not, something else on the smaller side would be great."

Sarah ~~totally lost track of this thread~~ went to get safety gear. "We're wearing vests and eye and ear protection," she informed Veronica. "Have you ever been shooting before?"

"You're in luck," Ino said cheerfully, as she pulled a gun kit out of the cabinet and opening it up, "looks like we've got a .22."

Closing the kit, she grabbed a box of bullets for it as well and brought it over, re-locking the cabinet. "It's not complicated, but if you've got any issues--Sarah-san'll probably be able to help you and, if not, I'm totally capable of it."

A beat.

"Any questions before I head back to the counter?"

"Thanks," Veronica said, taking the gun and the bullets. "I think I'll be okay."

She set them down and joined Sarah by the safety gear. "Yes, I've gone shooting before, though it's been a while. I generally rely on my taser or a knife when I need a weapon."

"Well," Sarah said, as she shrugged into her vest. She hated the strain of it over her breasts, but she had to model good habits.

"This will give you more distance. Are you comfortable loading it, or should I walk you through that?"

Ino grinned slightly, and quietly let herself out of the room.

She'd come and check the clean up when they were done.

Veronica nodded, pulling on her own vest before grabbing a pair of safety glasses and a set of padded ear muffs. She hung the latter around her neck until she was ready to shoot.

"I think I can manage," she said. "My dad taught me basic gun safety when I was six."

"The sheriff took good care of his little girl," Sarah smiled. She loaded her gun, keeping the safety on. "Would you mind loading while I watch?"

"Pretty much," Veronica replied. "And, yeah, that's fine."

She checked to make sure the safety was on and then loaded the gun. It had been a while and she fumbled a little, but didn't have any major problems.

"You need to be faster," Sarah pointed out. "Still. Good practice. Ready to fire off a shot?"

Veronica nodded. She pulled her ear protection on and then stepped up to the lane. After flicking off the safety, she fired a shot at the target, aiming for the heart, but hitting the shoulder.

"Not bad for a first time in a while," Sarah said approvingly, then stood beside Veronica. "You want to move your wrist down and just about an inch to the side," she said. "And your feet are a little far apart."

Veronica corrected her stance and fired again. Her shot still didn't hit exactly where she was aiming, but it was much closer this time.

"Much better," Sarah said. "Finish out the clip practicing that way. Any questions you want to ask while you work, or would that distract you too much?"

"I'm guessing that at some point the CIA will supply me with my own weapon?" Veronica said, carefully taking aim and firing again.

"If I recommend you go on to the next level at the end of summer it'll come automatically ~~unless you don't want that~~," Sarah confirmed, watching Veronica work. "I could have requisitioned one already but I figured you wouldn't need it on the island."

"I don't really need one," Veronica said. "Especially if I can borrow one here when I come to practice."

She finished off the clip with her last shot finally hitting the paper target square in the heart.

"You learn fast," Sarah said, smiling again. "Can you use your left hand at all?"

Being ambidextrous was an asset, though not a requirement.

"Uh... I've never tried," Veronica admitted.

She flipped the safety on and re-loaded the gun. It felt awkward in her left hand but she took aim and fired. The bullet didn't go anywhere near the target.

"... and now we know you aren't ambidextrous," Sarah said, with a thin smile. "Keep trying for the rest of that clip. Never hurts to be prepared, right?"

"Guess not," Veronica said with a chuckle. She did finish the clip though and her aim improved slightly but nowhere near as accurate as her aim with her right hand.

"Keep going with that," Sarah said thoughtfully, tilting her chin. "Unless you need a break. Are you starting to feel the weight?"

Not that a .22 weighed much. but.

"Not yet," Veronica said. "But I suspect I'll feel it soon."

Mostly from straining against the kickback. She reloaded again and switched back to her right hand.

The kickback would kill you.

"Want to see how you do with moving targets?" Sarah wondered aloud.

"Probably a good idea," Veronica agreed after emptying the clip. Her aim was improving at least. "I doubt the bad guys will stand still to let me shoot them."

"Nice as it would be if they did," Sarah agreed, going to flick the switch to make the paper targets slowly travel across the room. "You're still trying to get the heart."

Veronica nodded and reloaded the gun. "Unless we need to interrogate, right? And then go for the leg to slow them down or stop them?"

"Not if you're CIA," Sarah said, wincing a little. "Federal officers shoot to kill or don't shoot."

That ... was hard to hear the first time. almost as hard to say.

"If they're wounded they can shoot back, and there's more chance you're making a scene."

"Okay," Veronica said. "That... makes sense."

She hoped that she didn't have to shoot much.

"You took that well," Sarah said, frowning just a little. She wasn't going to be dramatic about it if Veronica wasn't -- she normally wasn't dramatic at all -- but they were talking about killing.

This week is taking forever!
