luke's diner | saturday | june 20

With an event occurring in town, Ned figured he should get into work extra early to get started on the food preparation in case the extra people descended on the diner. The staff were busy buzzing about the famous (or lack thereof) people in town for the convention. Ned was pretty sure he heard them daring each other to flash someone or even go streaking.

Ned just hoped they didn't do it in the diner.

Luke's was open and there was no flashing. Yet.

Kaylee had yet to visit Ned at work since she'd had to go with him due to being a wee raccoon.

So, she wandered in on Saturday afternoon, took a seat, and waited for him to notice her.

Ned didn't immediately notice who it was though he knew a customer had come in. "Just a second," he called, without looking up. "Be right with you."

"You look real busy," Kaylee noticed thoughtfully.

Well, he recognized that voice and whirled around to grin at her. "Hiya! I'm not, not really. Just cooking some things. What're you doing here?"

"I came t'visit you!" she said in an obvious sort of way. "What're you makin'?"

"Cookies," he said, holding one up. "Want one?"

"Always!" she said delightedly, reaching out for it.

"It's very chocolatey so be careful," he teased, handing it over. "You might end up bouncing off the walls."

"Who, me?" Kaylee asked, in a stunning display of self-awareness.

"Oh, yes you," he said and tossed his dish towel aside to lean on the counter. "How are you?"

"Happy," she told him honestly, taking a bite of cookie. "How're you?"

"Not bad," he said, taking a cookie for himself. "Just preparing the diner in case that thing in town gets busy and they need food."

"What if they did?" Kaylee asked, eyes wide. "What if they did an' you got real busy an' it was all bustly?"

"Well, that's why there's more than just me here," he said. "And there's a lot of pre-prepared food, just in case. I'll just be tired tonight."

"I'll give you a backrub!" she volunteered.

"You aren't going to go to any of the things that are happening in town?" he asked.

"Maybe," she said thoughtfully. "I think some of 'em are real famous, right?"

"I really don't know," he said, shaking his head. "I don't keep up with that scene very well."

"I know," she said happily. "These cookies is really good, sweetheart."

"Not too much chocolate?" he wondered.

"Ain't no such thing," she told him.

"For people who are allergic to chocolate, any amount of chocolate it too much," he pointed out smartly.
