There were certain things you just couldn't plan for waking up to. Finding out you and the baby you cared for had been turned into miniature ponies was one of them, but that was by now a year in the past. Finding out your mother (or, the template that had served for her to be cloned from, but Jean was a complicated subject at the best of times anyway) was coming to the school many years in advance of your meeting her, if that happened at all-- wasn't out of the ordinary, but still ranked up there.

Finding out your partner's favorite weapons had turned into very affectionate, very deadly women was another one of them.

This was why Nate opened up the store as early as he could this morning, balancing Jan on his knee and shooting the occasional wary glance towards the stairs leading up into the apartment.

Who are both here and accounted for.

Having had nothing turn into a person on her, Jean was there on time, of course. And far too chipper.

It was disgusting.

"Good morning, Mr. Dayspring!"

"Good morning, Jean," Nathan replied, offering her a slight smile. "Coffee?"

"Uh--" Jean paused, thinking about if she wanted to try drinking coffee enough for this. "Sure!"

Nate snagged the thermos off his desk and got up to get her a cup. "Notice anything out of the ordinary today?"

Jean hesitated for a moment. "Should I have?"

"It's a Fandom weekend," Nathan replied, pottering about for that cup. Ah, there. The red and yellow one. No reason. "Inanimate objects are coming to life."

That just got him a bit of a stare. "Really?"

"It's not as bad as being turned into ponies," Nathan offered. You really couldn't get more serious-and-unironic voice than that. "Milk or sugar?"

Which just made this so much more disturbing. "Both. Please."

He had faith she could handle it.

Pouring coffee, milk, sugar - you'd almost mistake him for domestic - and he offered her a cup. "How far has your telepathy come along thusfar?"

"I think it's coming along alright," Jean said uncertainly as she took the cup. "I'm able to block out everyone mostly."

He nodded. "Jan?" Nathan took his own cup, then offered the little girl a hand.

"This way, please," he told Jean, moving towards the meditation room.

Following him quickly, Jean was unable to keep from smiling down at Jan. "Is she going to help as well?"

"It might be useful down the line," Nathan said, vaguely. Cryptically, even. It was what he was good at.

He walked into the room, settling the little girl down before sitting himself.

Jean put the coffee to the side, standing there for a moment before also sitting a little across from him.

"Beyond shielding, what have you been taught?" Nathan asked her, now that he was settled.

"Mostly just that. Professor Xavier and I needed to work every day to keep everything under control."

"But you've managed here in Fandom." It wasn't a question.

He reached out to give her shields a light telepathic tap.

"It got easier to handle after we worked on it," Jean replied brightly. The shields remained steadfastly in place, though she was looking concerned. "Should I let them down for you?"

"Just testing the bounds," he assured her, "But the mind might be an easier playing field."

He took the opportunity to drain a good lot of his coffee.

Exhaling, Jean closed her eyes and set about the usual process of dismantling parts to allow a teacher in. The same as she did with the Professor, really!

Where Len's brain goes 'ow' as she attempts to reread all of OSC's Enderverse Shadow books in a few days' time.
