Morgan stared at his phone.

...he was just about done with Reid's room, the angel had his room, and he knew that Murphy's Law should require that his phone ring since he'd gotten zero sleep last night.

"Yeah, you just try it."

Of course, the lack of a case to fly off on didn't help him with all the reports and paperwork and--crap, he had to call Ino today to let her know he had her design done. Ugh, it was going to be a long day.

"No longer in his proper place. If . . . if He had ever been there in the first place."

He leaned his chin on his hands.

"Now, what makes you say that? 'Proper place'. What's his proper place? I'm not doubting you, man, I'm just asking."

"The angels," Castiel said, "have been working towards the Apocalypse. Under the belief that they would win, with no concern towards the cost to the world and the human kind living on it. That is not something I believe my father would approve of."

"So by 'proper place' you mean at command central? Up there in his throne-type-thing?"

He's trying to figure out how this all works without being too intrusive.

"Overseeing the work of the angels, yes. I'm uncertain of the actual throne. I've not been in His presence."

"You don't know that," he pointed out with a slight frown, "that He's not overseeing. If I remember correctly, He seems to like waiting until the last second to see what's going to happen. Just cause you're not watching from the box seats doesn't mean you're not at the game."

That metaphor went right over Castiel's head.

"When I was sent here, Lucifer was moments from rising, and I was attempting to protect the only man who could prevent it from the wrath of archangels."

If that wasn't last second, he wasn't sure he wanted to see what was.

"Sounds like the last second to me. So," and it was a loaded question, really, "how'd you end up here?"

"I don't know. But I suspect . . . I suspect I must have lost."

Morgan's lips curled up on one side.

"You suspect, but you don't know. Anything funny about this place that you've found?"

"I have not had time to look for the humor of this situation."

Morgan shook his head.

"No, no, no, not funny 'ha ha'. Funny like... might be helpful. Like it's different than someplace else."

"Such as the fact that the man I pulled from Hell is eighteen years old here and has never died?" Castiel raised an eyebrow. "Or perhaps that I've been informed that squirrels gather the news of the town to be reported each night on the radio. Or that any number of people have now been informed of my true nature and accepted it without even blinking. Yes. Things are quite . . . funny, here."

It was like a hammer between the eyes.

"Do you know what I do, Castiel? Not... not here, I don't mean, but back at home, on my computer, telecommuting. Did I tell you?"

[obviously, I have no idea, but Morgan's running with one ^_^]

"You said you were BAU, FBI." The initials had little to no meaning to Castiel, and it showed.

"That's right. BAU. Behavioral Analysis Unit. What we do is, we use the clues available to us, and our knowledge of the unknown subjects we're looking for on a case, to figure out what they're thinking so we can stop them."

He let that settle for a moment before giving Castiel a faint smile.

"And I can tell you, a lot about a person gets shaped by the way they were brought up. And when they're a teenager, that's when you really get an idea of who they are and what makes them tick."

Castiel frowned. "I don't follow."

Gideon might have run away two years ago, but his words would never leave any of the agents who'd worked under him.

Our best weapon is an accurate profile.

By extension, he'd learned that that didn't just go for the unsubs. Knowing your team mates, knowing who could take what, knowing what someone would do under pressure...

"You've got a guy who's important enough that they had you pull him out of Perdition," Morgan said slowly, "and now you've been sent here, to where he's eighteen years old. You get to see this guy as a kid, what's down underneath everything else, how he ticks, how he works, what's important to him. A lot of it's solidifying now, at this age. And if his family is here? That's even more information.

"Knowing what you're dealing with when it comes to the bad guys is important, but knowing what you're dealing with when it comes to the people you have to work with? That's essential."

"So you believe I may be here to . . . get to know my charge better."

Dean, for all his varied secrets, had a tendency to wear himself on his sleeve. Still, perhaps there was something to Morgan's words.

"I would postulate in return, however, that observing an individual under the most trying of circumstances might also give this invaluable insight into their being. I'm not certain what you think I might observe here that I did not learn while freeing the man from Hell or working with him in the months since."

"They're two different things," he said, because this was his business.

"And stress works in a whole lot of different ways. If you've got an unsub in a position with a hostage and you stress him one way, he gives himself away. You stress him the other way, he kills the hostage and you've got another body on your hands.

"People are complex. Every little action, reaction; every little piece of the puzzle adds something new to a profile. What might mean one thing to someone could mean something to someone else."

It was a bit gruesome but again, this was his business.

"A quick, direct slice to an artery might mean he needs the job done quick, or that he's a trained butcher, or that he was just slicing what got in his way. The way you tell is from all the interlocking pieces around it."

Castiel nodded, now listening carefully, thinking of how he'd misread Uriel, blinded by his friendship with his fellow angel, until he had put the pieces together on the breaking of the devil's trap.

"You have a point," he acknowledged. "What is an 'unsub'?"

"Short for unknown subject. It's what we call the criminal when we don't know who we're looking for. We try not to give them names because that limits your perception. As long as we don't know what we think we should be looking for, we'll keep looking at everything."

"If you're looking for a demon, you may miss the corrupted angel next to you," Castiel rephrased to himself. "And you use the information you gather to track suspects?"

"Exactly," he agreed to the first part with a slow nod, glad the angel was starting to go with it, if only a little.

"Track, find, bag, catch. Sometimes we use it to get them to tell us where they are, sometimes we use it to find them where they're hiding. All depends on the unsub. Strategy's different depending on what you're dealing with.

"Most importantly, we do our best to keep as many bodies off the ground as possible."

Castiel tilted his head and smiled slightly. "And you wonder, Derek Morgan, why God has not stepped in here on Earth."
