The Docks, Wednesday

Jack was -- surprise, surprise -- sitting on his boat, drinking beer, and fishing. This really was the life.

He'd discovered that the televisions on the island showed Wormhole X-Treme! from time to time, and was a little grumpy about it. Sure, he should have expected an interdimensional island to get interdimensional television, but still.

That was why the sign propped up on the dock now read:

Captain Jack's Wild Ride
Boat for hire

Martin Lloyd is an idiot.
Ask me how I know!

"Who is Martin Lloyd and how do you know he's an idiot?" Claire asked, walking up to the docks in the evening after closing up the comic shop.

"He's the creator and producer of Wormhole X-Treme!," Jack answered. "And I know from personal experience. He's a lovable idiot, though -- I never ACTUALLY strangled him."

"I take it you're not a fan of Wormhole X-Treme?" Claire asked. She had only caught a few random episodes of the show over the years when Lyle was watching.

Jack shrugged. "Not really a fan of sci-fi," he explained. "Except the classics -- Space Battles, Galaxy Quest, you know, the good stuff. Besides, Colonel Danning's a dumbass."

In the way that he wasn't anything like Jack, because the writers and actors didn't know he was based on Jack.

"Was he the hot one?" Claire asked. Because, you know, teenage girl.

Jack sighed. "Yes, he was 'the hot one'." With air quotes. "But way too light on the witty banter. You know, I was the show's technical advisor, briefly, and nobody listened to a damn thing I had to say?"

"You were the technical advisor?"

Claire took a moment to think about that. "Wait. That show was based on real life?"

Jack grimaced. "Wellllllll... I wouldn't go that far. It might -- and, you understand, you can't repeat this; it's a matter of national security -- it might have been 'invented'" -- with air quotes -- "by an alien with amnesia."
