Wellspring Arms & Meditation Center, Saturday

Today, Cable was continuing his exploration of stock. It was very much possible that he was cataloguing where best to begin Jan's education (once she turned the right age) at the same time, but if so, he was keeping mum on the subject.

Unlike the child in question, who trailed after him, babbling about snatches of some of the words she'd heard him say. This... was probably going to lead to an interesting vocabulary at her part.

Tether watched it all with an indulgent eye from the corner.

Wellspring Arms was open.

It was early and Irulan thought she would like to use the Wellspring's mediation room, she had pancakes with her. She did promised Jan after all, "Good morning, Mayor Summers."

"Morning, Irulan," Cable greeted, looking away from the case - and immediately snagging Jan's hand while he was at it.

She presented the pancake pack with a smile, "As promised, pancakes."

"Pancakes!" Jan knew that word by now, yes, and her other tiny hand outstretched for the pack.

"Thank you," Cable said, reaching himself - he'd check if they were safe upstairs - "She'll appreciate it."

Because he was so well-versed in the cravings of nearly-two-year-olds. "What brings you here, beyond pancakes?"

"I hope she will," Irulan said then smiled again, "I wish to use your meditation room. The past week has been... trying."

Irulan didn't mention the singing but her tone implied it.

The edge of his mouth twitched up. "I'm afraid our annual events haven't changed," he said, "Better just to weather it."

"True," she said, rueful, "it's just that I've never been quite this effected before. Also, my stepson turned into a tree. I confess that threw me for a loop."

"At least a tree is easier to keep out of trouble than an animal," Cable offered, closing the case he'd been working on so he could make his way back to his desk, Jan still eagerly babbling about pancakes as she followed.

"You have a point," Irulan conceded and the thought of Leto as an animal was enough to tire her out. He'd have no end of fun playing pranks with her.

"Barring the usual incidents and foilage, how has your retirement treated you so far?"

Look, he was trying to get into this whole 'small talk' issue, especially as he hoisted Jan up onto his knee and she - sensibly - tried to go for the pancakes again.

"Aside all the other incidents?" No one accusing her of being a traitor or on a verge of being a traitor, no endless political debates and constant fear of assassination. "I actually find Fandom restful."

Practically anything after Paul and then Alia's rein was relaxing.

"It is restful," Cable agreed; his own troubles might have been more complex even than that, but that was hardly the point. "No infighting... just the occasional invasion from outside our borders..."

Of course, thinking of it in terms like that was still too narrow for his thoughts, but that's where Jan came in. Local and peaceful would do for her.

"There are worse places I could be," Irulan said, "and I had fond memories of this island and my schoolmates."

She looked at Jan and the way she scrambled after the pancakes, "Pancakes must be her favorite meal."

"I think she just likes Saturday mornings," Cable said, vaguely, "Pancakes are part and parcel." He smiled slightly. "You were here just prior to my time. Any invasions that I missed?"

Irulan thought back, "There was the one where aliens invaded the island on graduation day but I missed that. Oh, there was a time Shadows came to invade the island. I was there for that event, part of the research team that helped figure out what those beings were."

"Shadows...?"

Now that had piqued his interest.

"Yes," Irulan nodded and explained, "it turned out Cameron Mitchell and a friend disturbed an old burial ground or something of the like and the spirits sealed within broke free. They began to attack people and those attacked began to... the only word I could conjure is 'transparent'. Fortunately, we found a way to banish them in time before things became worse."

"And that's the story of Fandom in a nutshell..." he mused. "For now, at least."

A ghost of a smile lingered, "Yes, in a nutshell indeed."

"It's hopeful," Cable continued, glancing down at Jan, "Even to those who occasionally have some trouble with the concept."

"Yes, the human spirit prevails," Irulan said, suppressing the smile. Cable seemed very fond of his daughter. She glanced around, "The meditation room is down the hall?"

Cable nodded at the doorway leading into the hall. "Yep," he said. "Let me know when you're done."

Remembering what Ino had told him, Liir had set out this morning with the express purpose of coming to the Wellspring Arms and meeting 'Cable-san'. As such, it wasn't too late in the day when he slipped through the door and peered around to look for someone who could be the person Ino talked about all the time.

Meanwhile, he tried to think of something to say to the man besides 'Hello, I'm Liir, and I just thought I should meet you because you're very important to Ino'. So far, no luck.

He wasn't expecting the dog, or the baby, and he suddenly wished he had Makejoy with him to make this easier.

"Hello."

...that was a good start, right?

In some establishments, yes.

In this one, it meant Cable lifted his head (and his attention) up from Jan to answer by a now-reflexive, "Can I help you?"

"You're Mister Cable, yes?"

Yes, this had definitely been put off far too long.

He didn't wait for an answer before taking a few steps forward and offering his hand.

"Liir, sir."

"Just Cable," he said, shifting Jan out of the way enough to take Liir's hand (with the metal one, because the simple human flesh one was entirely too preoccupied with the kid), "Or Mayor Summers. You're Ino's friend."

Not that he kept a file on everyone ever to be featured in a radio boadcast, or anything.

He nodded to that, not particularly bothered by the metal hand if only because he'd traveled with a metal man.

"Yes. For some time now. And, well," and it was really a good show of how much Liir had grown in the year and a half he'd been here because he wasn't actually running and hiding, "I thought it might be nice to meet you since she speaks of you so often. Sir."

"She's been employed here for quite some time," he allowed. Wryly, "For better or for worse. But you've been here some time, as well." He wasn't going to ask the question. He was just curious, for the most part.

"I have," he admitted, "and I figured it was worth a morning's flight to put a name to a face. A year and some change of hoping it might happen is long enough, after all."

"A morning's flight," Cable repeated. "I didn't realise you'd come here on broomback."

See? No files AT ALL.

"Was there anything you wanted to know?"

He turned with a rather small smile to show the broom hanging from something of a makeshift holster at his hip.

"I usually do when I come into town, especially when we're in the cabins. But no, there wasn't anything I wanted to know, really. It just seemed high time I came along and met you, if you don't mind me saying."

Then Liir considered that.

"Was there anything you did?"

"Not specifically," he replied, reaching across the desk to snag his cup of coffee. "Beyond 'how have you found your time here thusfar'... and 'had any luck surviving Ino'..."

He could have been making a joke. Possibly. His tone generally made it hard to tell.

"Much better than home, and much safer as well," he said with a brief duck of his head. He was smiling, though.

"Which answers both, really."

Of course Jean was there again. Now that she had finished hiding from everyone. Singing in public had never been something she wanted to do again.

Ever.

"Hello, Mr Dayspring!"

"Jean," Cable greeted, looking up with a slight inch of smile, "Good morning."
