luke's diner | saturday | july 18

The wave of singing had missed Ned. Unfortunately, the wave of singing hadn't missed the NPC staff and they were busy singing into rolling pins and dancing with brooms when he arrived. Oddly enough, this wasn't even island driven. They just wanted to sing. They tried to get Ned to join them, even going so far as dropping a dish rag on his head and saying he was the new female lead but Ned escaped and let them do their musical number. At least it wasn't terrible singing.

Dani entered the diner and almost immediately wanted to back out but the scent of coffee kept her feet from moving. Finally she compromised, found a table farthest from the singing Disney crew and slouched into the sit next to it.

Good posture was reserved for after coffee.

She nodded to the kid, "Coffee, black, lots of sugar."

No one could ever accuse Dani of never getting to the point.

"Thanks," Dani said, reached for the coffee and proceeded to drink. It scalded her mouth and she hissed slightly but she continued sipping until the cup was half empty. If Crews was here he'd argue the cup was half-full.

She glanced at the kid, he looked friendly. Friendly enough he wouldn't mind answering a few questions, "I heard this was a high school town."

Yeah, Dani noticed the big honkin' castle.

"I wondered what it was," she said, shook her head, "whatever happened to a plain school building?"

That raised eyebrows. "Blew-up?"

"...into a castle."

"Yeah, okay," Dani said. People in Vegas made versions of the pyramid, apparently people in Maryland liked castles. She sipped her coffee, "Been studying here long...?"

She glanced at his chest but didn't see a name tag.

"Ned," Dani repeated, "Dani. And I'm not here by choice."

That could explain the crankiness except that's her default expression.

"I look military?" Her mother told her she acted too much like a cop even off duty but she sort of discounted that since maaman was talking about Dani getting married. "But no, I'm not military, I'm a cop."

"I wasn't even supposed to be here. I was supposed to be somewhere else."

It's amazing how cranky can shift to annoyed very fast.

Easy, Dani. Anger ruins joy, remember? Or whatever zen crap Crews liked to say.

Not the kid's fault you're stuck here.

"It's alright, I'll figure something out," she said easing off her annoyance and tried to make her voice as soothing as she can. "It's probably just the universe making fun of me."

"Never been to boarding school," Dani said, "but I've been to the Police Academy so I can guess what that's like."

Except Dani signed up for the Academy 'cause she's crazy like that.

The corners of her mouth quirked upward, "I suppose sooner or later the universe would have to stop being insecure."

"Hey, long as the universe doesn't mess with the coffee we're good."

"There a bus out of here?" Dani asked, interested, the roads seem too narrow for cars. "I don't know about being a cop here." But the mention of getting back on the job made her sit up straighter. She was police, she can't help it.

"Huh." And for the moment that's the last she'll mention that subject. She'd rather not walk to Maryland blind. Dani took another sip of coffee, "What's the local PD like?"

Dani nodded, she's not surprised it was a small force. Couldn't be much policing to be done in an island.

"Would you know who heads the station?"

Dani filed that information away, who knows? She might need it.

"Thanks, Ned," she polished off her coffee and took out her wallet to pay for the coffee.

She grimaced when she realized the people in the kitchen were still singing. "Is that a regular thing, the singing?"

"Good to know," Dani said, "I don't know if I can take it if I come into a musical diner everyday."

Not that she was, y'know, staying here everyday because she wasn't.

Co-workers deliberately doing something to annoy you? Yeah, Dani knew what that felt like. It made her a little sympathetic with the kid.

"Good coffee," she said and stood and hey, look, the kid was still taller than her.

"I'll keep that in mind," she promised and with a last nod turned to leave.
