Magic Box, Thursday, 7/23

Early Thursday morning, Tara went to the Magic Box to open on her own for the very first time. She dusted and arranged a display of crystals, then picked through the displays of herbs to replace any that seemed aging. The morning went faster than she'd expected; by the time everything in the store was arranged to her satisfaction, she had to take off for Driver's Ed.

After class (really? a gazelle?), she was back and settled on a stool behind the counter with a book on reading auras.

The idea of actual customers had her an odd mix of queasy and completely excited.

"Hi Tara," Layla said coming through the door after Tara returned from class. "How are you?"

"Hey Layla," Tara said, looking up from her book a little jerkily. "I -- I'm just fine. We watched a movie in class."

"Are you my v-very first customer?"

"Looks like it," she said wandering over to sniff some of the candles. "I was thinking of getting a few candles for my alcove for some alternative lighting. And something not too smelly so I wouldn't gross out the rest of the cabin. Did you enjoy having a gazelle for a teacher today?"

"I can show you over to the candle display," Tara offered, stepping around the counter. "We have unscented, or m-maybe something light like cucumber."

She blinked at the comment about Ziva, but ... "Uh. It was ... weird? I c-couldn't tell how she ran the DVD."

"Sometimes you're better off not knowing," Layla commented as she sniffed the cucumber candle. "It'll make your brain hurt less."

"True," Tara giggled. "I think my brain's done hurting. For now. Knock wood."

Which she did. What?

"I don't thinking even knocking wood will protect us from the island making our brain hurt," Layla chuckled. "Because just when you're getting used to the place? It'll rain pop-tarts. Or something."

Tara considered that for a moment. "If they were frosted pop-tarts that would be kind of fun."

"Yes but they have pointy corners," Layla replied earnestly. "Someone would no doubt get hit in the eye and then it won't be funny anymore. Well for that person anyway."

"So sad," Tara said woefully. "Th-they'd never want to eat breakfast pastries again, ever."

"I'm sure they'd get over it once they realized it was a frosted strawberry instead of one of those plain pop tarts," Layla replied. "Because who doesn't like that flavor?"

Tara tried hard to look solemn. "I'm sure some people are allergic."

"Yes but to those people it's worse," Layla grinned. "Forbidden fruit band all that."

Tara laughed again. "Like me if shrimp attacked the island?" she asked, adding, "I'm allergic to them."

"Don't worry, I'll warn you in advance if that ever happens," Layla assured her. "Or at least have epi-pens ready."

"My heroine," Tara said, faking a little bit of a swoon. "You could just dose me up with Benadryl, too."

"Oh sure," Layla laughed, "because during an invasion of giant shrimp the one thing we need is you to be all doped up."

"B-better doped up than choking," Tara argued amiably.

"Okay," Layla said looking amused. "We'll just keep a Benadryl cocktail around just in case that happens. However I totally get to videotape you acting dopey."

"Go for it," Tara said. "So do you like the cucumber candle? Or do you want to try" -- she sniffed a few, going for the weakest scents -- "green apple or linen?"

Layla sniffed the next two and came to a decision. "Linen," she said. "Most definitely."

Tara grinned. "I love that one. It's like realyl expensive, really clean sheets."

She felt like she was forgetting something, and, almost belatedly, added, "Anything else I can help you with?"

"No, I think this will be it," Layla said cheerfully as she picked up three candles. "Besides I'm not so much for the magic kind of thing."
