Everything But the Monkey - Thursday evening - 7/30
Fiona held the door for her roommate as they stepped into the pet store, the whole thing a very new experience for her in quite a few ways. They hadn't had a pet store in Del Sombre, for one, and if they had she had a very good idea that her mother wouldn't have let her and her brother within a 100 yards of it.
[for one! or if anyone wanted the pet store for anything, obviously ^_^]

But that was overridden when she walked into the store. Because: KITTEN.
"So should we look for the stuff first and then the kitten, or kitten and then stuff?" she asked.

"So cute!"
no subject
"...that one looks like my dad's cat, kind of."
no subject
Her eyes were drawn to a cage of tiny orange striped kittens. "Oh my god, those are so small."
no subject
But the kitten's pissy expression was almost too cute for trying too hard.
When Tara started looking at the little creamsicle-colored cats, Fiona had to agree. You could tell because of the oooooo.

Whatever Tara was going to say, it was cut off by squeaky noises as one of the kittens unfolded itself from his siblings, streeeeeeeeethced, and ambled over to sniff at the bars of the cage and Tara's finger. She petted the damp nose.
"He's making friends," she said, awed.
no subject
"Though he could be a she. Cats are difficult to identify in that sense."
no subject
"He or she," she said. "I just would r-rather be wrong than say 'it.' "
She glanced around for the shopkeeper. "I think I need to hold him."
no subject
"She wants to hold that one," she said.

The cat looked rather bemused, pleased to find a person it could so easily wrap around its smallest claw, and deigned to purr.
"This one is mine," Tara said to Fiona. She didn't take her eyes off the kitten.
no subject
"She's very pretty," Fiona said as she watched the kittens.
no subject
She and the kitten were still bonding, and she plopped down at the end of the aisle to play with it a little more as Fiona kept watching the cats. "I bet our room's big enough for two."
no subject
"What do you think of, um, her?"
no subject
She was testing the name. Marmalade, Lady Marmalade, Patti LaBelle ... it probably wouldn't stick, to judge from how she wrinkled her nose.
no subject
The little gray kitten peered at the marmalade kitten, then looked up as if to say 'yes, it's a ball of fluff, mommy, what do you want?"
no subject
"T-totally best friends." Tara tried to sound confident. "I think we have pets, Fiona."
She'd bounce when she was no longer holding a kitten, who would not be named LaBelle.
... maybe Mr. Moxy?
no subject
"I think they'll be okay. We'll just have to get them lots of toys."
She ducked down and kissed the top of her kitten's little head, considering names for a boy and a girl.
Maybe this was silly. Maybe she just needed one bright spot of happiness when everything else was kind of sucking, but the purring was really really soothing.
"Can we hold them while we pick out toys and food?" she asked the pet store employee. She got a nod, at which point she tipped her head towards the food isle.

Tara could always use unconditional love. Cats, or at least kittens, were good for that.
It was entirely possible they would have the most spoiled cats in the dorms.
