Caritas - Friday Evening

Chuck had heard the radio announcement today and he had ~~handwavily~~ found out just who was in the clinic. He wasn't the type to wait around a hospital and, even if he was, knew that there were certain people who wouldn't want him hanging around. So he was happy to use work as a distraction today and immediately headed for the scotch as soon as he came in.

He wasn't worried, dammit. He just felt like getting drunker than usual.

"You look like someone punched you in your girl bits," Barney said because he cared about his students, you see.

Chuck managed to laugh a little. "Well, some shit is going down, in case you haven't heard."

"Please, when is there not shit going down?" Barney asked. "This is a time we should all be joining together at the bar! But not in a homely Cheers manner because that would be sad."

"Half the town is in a weird coma so I'm not sure there's going to be too much gathering going on," Chuck explained. "But, hey, I'm not going to complain should people decide to hang out here. More money for me."

"Right, you're the teenage bar owner," Barney said. "Much better for business than the old dude in a bathrobe." Oh the shuddering.

Chuck smirked. "Yeah, Jolee was creepy. But to his credit, that outfit did make me want to drink."

She was jet (and time!) lagged and those squirrels were seriously creeping her out right now. If it wasn't crazy to give those squirrels more attributes than the typical rodent, she'd actually think they were plotting something, the way they were watching her. But considering those were the greatest of her problems (oh, and she hated her family, but that wasn't anything new), Rachel really didn't know how good she had it. And the fact that she just always hit the bar on Friday (or, at least, she had started to) was probably just a subconscious way to cling nicely to something normal.

"Something stronger tonight, sugar," she ordered, "but not too strong. Believe you me, I need it."

It was a matter of opinion as to whether or not her obliviousness made the irony sweeter or simply just more pathetic.

That earned a laugh. "He could've stood for a good suiting up. Did the chicks burst through the doors the night you took over?"

Barney had won Broshambo dibs on this one and boy was he gonna enjoy meeting her. "Having a close encounter of the Fandom kind?"

"Bad day?" Chuck asked as he started to get her something a bit stronger than her usual martini.

"Oh, Lord, no," Rachel said, blue eyes widening with the right amount of drama, because she'd heard about plenty of those kind of encounters (she'd deny being involved in any herself, no matter how untrue, as well) and they were so not her cup of tea, thank you. "Worse. Family."

"There's always an influx of women when I'm here," Chuck said with a smirk. "Even when I didn't own the bar."

Rachel drew in a stiff breath. "Bad week," she corrected. "You know, I remember telling you all about how glad I am to be out of Africa, but, jeez oh man, it would have been nice if my mother and sister could just turn right around and go on back."

"Eesh," Barney replied, managing to look good doing it. "Then let me buy you a slew of drinks to drown your troubles."

"Sweetie," Rachel drawled with a shake of her head, "you could buy me the whole bar and I'd be sure to get good use out of it, believe you me."

No, actually, she'd probably gingerly sip through half of a martini and then start claiming she felt a little faint and not touch anything more after that, but still probably let him keep buying more if he wanted. In fact, she paused a moment to slip a subtle look-over and decided that, hey, she might be able to make it through a few more careful sips than usual.

"Rachel, by the way," she said, offering a hand since she decided an introduction could be underway, as well. "Charmed."

"With kids like you around, I feel I could retire from teaching," Barney said proudly. "And then I remember the others and I sigh and order another!"

"Ah, yes. Family troubles," Chuck said with a sympathetic nod. He slid the drink over to Rachel. "I understand your need to drink."

"I'm doing my best to teach others my ways but they're being uncooperative," Chuck said with an exaggerated sigh.

"You're a peach, darlin'," Rachel said with a small smile as she took the drink, swirling it around a little in the glass before taking a sip. "And that's not the half of it, either," she trudged straight ahead once that nice little first sip was swallowed down. "You think they could just cut it out for a manosecond for a girl's birthday, but, no siree, that's too much to ask for my family."

"Oh Rachel, consider me the charmed one," Barney replied, taking her hand and moving to kiss it delicately. "Barney Stinson."

"It was your birthday?" Chuck asked. "Drinks are on me tonight then."

Well, now then. Just color her pleased as punch; the fellow actually had some manners. It was incredibly refreshing, especially after the savagery of her family.

And not a spot or a horn or weird clothes in sight. Yet. But Rachel was going to try to be optimistic.

"Well, we could probably go back and forth on which one of us is more the charmed, but that wouldn't be much fun, now, would it?"

"Even if it's already passed?" Rachel asked, not one to complain, of course, but her sweet little drawl and a flutter of lashes worked better with something coy like that.

Southern women were so much fun. "There'd be the potential for it getting old fast and we're both far too young and attractive to let that happen."

"Well, I'd certainly hope so," Rachel said. "I've just had a birthday, but I'd like to think I've got a while before I have to start handing in my youthful card."

Of course, that also wouldn't stop Rachel from acting older than she was, either, if the situation called for it. She was young still, but also very mature for her age, what with what she'd been through all her life.

"Of course. I feel bad for forgetting it," Chuck said. Ignore the fact he never knew when it was in the first place.

"But you never even knew it to begin with," Rachel said, with a little laugh that made it clear that, yes, after that one mention of it, she would easily forget that fact. "Still, I think a drink or two would make up for it just fine, Chuck, thank you."

"Just? And here I missed the party," Barney replied. In general, if a woman was at least 18, he was good to go. Age was not a restriction. Fugly was.

"Wasn't much of a party," Rachel admitted with a little smirk, "which maybe means I've overdue for a bit of a reprisal."

"Is there any way I can offer my services to make that happen?" Barney asked.

"You much of a party planner, Barney?" Rachel asked, sweetly, not even too terribly conscious of the idea that she was probably in this more to pass work onto someone else than because he was cute, although the cute factor was pretty up there. "I put together a little soiree for my tenants not long ago, and that went very well, but it would never hurt to have an extra hand."

"Can I plan a party? Only if it's meant to be Legendary." Yes, the capitalization was evident in the pronunciation.

"Legendary?" Rachel asked, making sure to put the proper emphasis on capitals and be appropriately impressed. "Why, for my little birthday?"

Of course, it was pretty evident that Rachel felt she was deserved quite a few Legendary parties for her benefit, thank you very much.

"I think your little birthday could handle it," Barney decided, giving the bar a little smack with his hand.

It was really hard not to be emboldened by conviction like that, and Rachel chuckled a little. "Well, I sure know I could, if anything."

"You know, I am quite the Legendary guy around here. If there's anything else I can help you with, I'm always around." Somewhere.

"I'll have to keep that in mind," Rachel said, and she likely would. "But if you're so Legendary, how come I haven't heard of you yet?"

And, yes, Rachel was very proud of her cleverness in that one.

That was just sad when people hadn't heard of him. "I'm afraid I left town for a good six months and only just returned to finish my good work."

"Well, isn't that just surreptitious," Rachel mused. "Just in time for me to arrive and need help."
