The Perk [Friday Evening]

Veronica was packed and ready to go. Her portal was booked for early tomorrow morning and now she had nothing to do until it was time to leave.

So she headed over to the Perk for some coffee. Caffeine was never a bad thing.

Dani felt she needed a pick-me-up after getting thrown from her horse earlier in the day, so she stopped by the Perk for an iced coffee, and maybe some extra ice for her ankle, which was still swollen.

She smiled politely at the other woman while waiting for the barista to finish making her drink.

Veronica smiled back and nodded at the empty seat across from her.

Dani took that as an invitation, but she figured it was only proper to ask anyway. "Mind if I take this seat? I'm trying to avoid excessive walking at the moment."

"Feel free," Veronica said. "Are you okay?"

"Oh, I'll be fine. Some bluish-green animal ran out in front of my horse while I was riding earlier and I ended up getting thrown. It's not the first time, but I'd rather hurt my ankle than hit my head," said Dani.

"Ah, a teal deer," Veronica said. "They're pretty common around here. You new to Fandom?"

"Yes, that describes it perfectly! I guess I'm still somewhat new. I've been here since the beginning of the summer," said Dani. "I moved here from California to purchase the local stable."

"Oh, cool," Veronica said. "I'm actually heading back to California tomorrow to finish college. I was here teaching for the summer."

"Wow, that's a coincidence," said Dani. "What part of the state are you from? I grew up in Fremont, but I was born in San Francisco. Or at least I think I was. I'm afraid I don't know much about my birth mother."

"I'm from Neptune," Veronica said. "It's near San Diego."

She raised an eyebrow. "You were adopted?"

Dani nodded. "You're from a bit further south than me. And I wasn't adopted, but more like abandoned. My dad had an affair with a woman who worked for him, she got pregnant with me, and he dumped her. After I was born, she met him once more to say good-bye. But she left me behind with him and took off."

"Oh, wow, that sucks," Veronica said. "Have you tried to find your birth mother?"

"I tried, but I didn't get the answers I was looking for," said Dani with a shrug. "I managed to track down my dad's ex-wife, only to discover that she wasn't really my mother like Dad had led me to believe."

Fred wandered into the Perk, foregoing actually ordering anything.

"So. Out back into the world, huh?"

Veronica nodded. "Yep. Can I buy you a cup of coffee?"

"Nah," Fred said. "Don't need those... things. Calorie shit."

"You're counting calories?" Veronica asked.

"Friggin diet, yeah," Fred said

"Good for you," Veronica said. "Fandom is a good place to change your life."

Veronica nodded. "You gonna come visit me sometime?"
