Town Hall, Monday

Cable had come into town hall relatively early that morning, Jan kept perilously close (not that that was anything new) and taken a seat in his office to start on preparations for the coming school semester. Granted, his responsibilities mainly pertained to town and the people in it, but the school was a big part of his constituency and the new semester would bring any number of new issues to light.

So there he was. Going through paperwork. Checking over his radio documentation from the last few months to see if there had been any problem cases.

It was a good job.

Jack knocked and waited outside before entering. "Jack Skellington, mister Mayor," he called.

Cable looked up - not so much from his work, but rather from keeping Jan from drooling all over it - and called, "Come in, please."

Jack ducked through the doorway and smiled. "Good morning, sir," he said. "I was wondering if I could speak to you about this year's Halloween festivities on the island."

"Halloween's still a while off, mr. Skellington," Cable replied (and did not add and there may be another massive Fandom Incident on the way there, which I'd rather be prepared for) as he pulled Jan back to rest somewhere that wasn't directly over his papers.

He didn't blink at Jack's appearance in the slightest.

"Let's just say that where I come from, we make a very big deal of that particular holiday," he said. "And I wanted to get your approval on the idea sooner rather than later, so that I would have enough time to get everything I want to all set up."

Jack was so not used to dealing with a mayor who wasn't all about Halloween. Or competent on his own.

"And what idea would that be?"

Cable was not so good at pedestrian things like holidays. World peace, on the other hand...

"I was planning on inviting a few of my friends from Halloween Town to visit. Give the children up at the school a real, honest scare. Decorate the town. Put on a dance for the adults to attend, as I'm sure the school is throwing one for the students."

Even as he spoke, a hundred other ideas were forming in his skull.

And a large, round skull, it was.

"All interesting ideas," he acquiesced, "But it's nowhere near time for Halloween yet. Once the date approaches, I wouldn't mind sitting down and seeing if any of your ideas are feasible for the occasion..."

Days like this, he missed Irene.

Jack nodded, looking a little disappointed. "I'll start making what arrangements I can," he said, "and I'll come back the first Monday of October. In the meantime, have a very nice day."

"I'll see you then, mister Skellington," Cable said, and reached across the table to offer him a hand.

It was the hand that was not on the baby. "We'll make this a succesful Halloween."

At least spending time with Irene had taught him about diplomacy.

Jack took the hand and shook it. "Thank you, mister Mayor," he replied, and smiled at Jan.

Hopefully the little one wouldn't be too upset about Daddy meeting with a skeleton.

Jan had seen too much in her tiny life already.

"Soup," she declared, "Hiii."

Cable smiled in a way that could be mistaken for indulgence.

Jack chuckled. "You have a nice day as well, little miss." He nodded at Cable and then departed, leaving him with Jan and his paperwork once more.

If she chooses to ping in.

Robin was there, and had wisely decided to forego stockings this week, after ripping two different pairs so unceremoniously last week. She took her place behind her mountain of paperwork, sipping coffee and considering where to start.

For any movings.

For hirings and firings.

Oz was hired at the Holiday Grove two (three?) weeks ago.

Add Vince Noir to the staff of The Gig, please!

Tim Desmond was hired at Android's Dungeon and is the new manager. And Adam Park is off the island now, so he can be removed from the staff of the comics shop.

I should probably catch some more sleep...
