Fourth Dimension Fine Arts & Antiques, Thursday

The Gallery was in the middle of an exhibit change-over. New paintings had arrived, and were being hung. Although every half hour or so Sophie decided she hated where something was and would move it. But really, it was ready and open.

This week's Exhibit: Susan Seddon Boulet: Goddesses and Shamans.

The gallery door is open, and there is lemonade and iced tea on the sideboard.

Reese was out on patrol just as promised and stopped at the Gallery. Seemed the gallery is under new management. Reese entered to look.

Sophie looked up from her computer, and smiled as she got to her feet. "Can I help you find anything? Or offer you a glass of iced tea?"

"Just lookin' around," she answered, "but I won't say no to a glass of iced tea."

Sophie poured her a glass, ice cubes clinking away, and handed it over, studying the customer. Not really much of an art fan, she would have guessed, from the plainness of her attire. Still, curiosity sold as much as appreciation, sometimes. "I'm the owner, Sophie Devereaux. I just bought the gallery from the previous owner. We met a few weeks ago, didn't we? Detective... Reese?"

She nodded to a painting of Athena (http://www.turningpointgallery.com/detail.asp?id=25) in front of them and said, "I rather liked the idea of mystical paintings to open the gallery with this week."

For a second Reese looked confused then she remembered, "Yeah, we met in the Town Hall with the sleeping thing." It was also the day Reese learned about teleportation and met that crazy blond.

"It does look mystical," she agreed. Reese didn't know anything about art but at least this was interesting.

"The artist was Brazilian; she liked recasting old myths with New World faces. That one's Athena. Goddess of civilization an wisdom." Sophie smiled and nodded. "Yes, the sleeping thing. Which I'm very happy was resolved." She concealed a shudder with a shrug. "I'm just as glad it's been quiet the last few weeks."

And that all her plans for a particular project were to be carried off off-island, and wouldn't concern her local constabulary.

"Interesting way of depicting her," Reese noted.

"Yeah, relatively quiet except for that one where all the guys turned into girls." Reese was still trying to deal with that. Or the one about meeting Jesus' BFFs or how about that one time with the angel and the Morgan dog? Focus, Reese. "But, yeah, quiet."

"Do you enjoy your duties here? I would think it would be very quiet in between crises," Sophie said, readjusting a painting of Aphrodite (http://gallery.arcobaleno.tv/photo.php?41+30). "And that incident with the men turning into women..." Sophie couldn't help but smirk a little. "Really only fair, even if some of them were very unnerved by it, don't you think?"

"Too quiet," Reese said, frowning at the painting. There was something about that painting. She returned the smirk, "Sheriff didn't take it well."

So did she but she's not gonna mention that.

Sophie concealed a small cough of laughter behind a fist, then poured herself a glass of lemonade to cover an attack of laughter. "Do you know, if there was any predictability to these incursions, I would think thieves or criminals would learn to take advantage of it. I suppose it's a good thing that it is so random."

As soon as Sophie meets Aphrodite, there would be blinking. A great deal of it.

"I just know these things cycle around, no one's ever been able to pin down the dates." Reese tilted her head slightly at Sophie's words. It wasn't alarm bells ringing but the cop in her did sit up and take notice of Sophie more. "Yeah, I'm surprised about it too. In LA something like this happens and stores would be ripped off in a blink of an eye."

"I'm glad my alarm system is state-of-the-art," Sophie said, then smiled ruefully. Perhaps that hadn't been the best observation to make; still, she had reason to think about it from both angles. "Not that that would stop some people on the Island, as my students proved to me. But now that it's been upgraded, at least it wouldn't be a simple job."

That made sense. Still, Reese made a note to keep an eye on Sophie.

"Yeah, I gathered we have some talented kids on the island." Reese took out her LAPD business card, "but if you need help with security, you can call me anytime."

"You're with the Los Angeles police department usually?" Sophie asked, reading the card. "Or have you only recently transferred?" If Detective Reese had told her befor, it completely slipped her mind now. "Thank you, I might just do that."

"Yeah, I'm LAPD but I'm... on leave from the department," Reese said. "I was on my way to the Caribbean and somehow ended up here."

"That's rather a large detour," Sophie said. "I have to admire it. This isn't the usual sort of place one is accidentally sent to. I'm still not certain if I would have come here, if I'd known what it was like."

"I certainly wouldn't," Reese muttered. She had enough weird in her life and the island just had to add to it.

"I was talked into staying here for a while." Thanks so much, Ted.

"Now that I'm done teaching for the time being, I've gotten fond of the place. Plus my curiosity just won't let me leave, as one of my friends pointed out. I would hate to hear about another invasion from someone here when I was elsewhere." Sophie sipped her drink and smiled. "So you'll be here for the hordes of new children soon, and whatever new creatures decide to acquaint themselves with them."

"I was trying not to think about the new kids," she said. A horde of brats descending on the island wasn't her idea of fun. "But I guess I'm curious about the invasions."

"So far, there have been alligators which I vehemently avoided-- fortunately there were others willing to act as pest exterminators-- and vampires in another dimension. As well as the odd nuisance arrival or transformation," Sophie said, thinking aloud. "Hopefully next time it will be something you feel comfortable shooting."

"Yeah, I think that'd make me feel better, if I finally get to shoot something." Reese looked around, "You were a teacher and now you're a gallery owner, what did you do before coming to the island?"

"I was-- I am-- an actress." Sophie couldn't help the tinge of pride in her voice when she said that. As well as the wistfulness. However unsuccessful in a theater, she'd been the Best Ever in the real world. "The first class I taught here was Acting. In fact? I'm in the production being performed in town next week. The Scottish Play."

Reese smiled wryly. Of course she's an actress. Miles and miles away from LA and she stumbled into one.

"I think I read about that somewhere," she said, "maybe I'll stop by. I like Shakespeare."

She'll never act (she doesn't consider undercover work acting) but she liked Shakespeare.

"I'll be certain the director saves you a good seat, Detective." Sophie's smile brightened. "And do stop in again when you're on your rounds. A bit of conversation breaks up a slow day here, and perhaps you'll see something you like."

"Why not," Reese said with a shrug, "it's something to do and you got a nice gallery." She drained the last of her drink. "Thanks for this."

"You're welcome. And I hope you have a good day."
