Cafe Fina, Sunday

When Zack got to work, it was clear he was getting over a case of the sniffles that had sequestered him to his room yesterday. And not because he was actually sniffling. Oh, no. It was clear because he was pouting.

Wiggly little social butterfly that he was, it bugged him to no end that he'd missed the newbie picnic as a result. When he got sick, it was never for long. And there was only one newbie day a... semester.

Okay, so he didn't have long to wait until next time, really. It wasn't going to stop him from making cow-eyes until the staff let him change the specials board.

Today's Specials:
Share a story about your first day on the island, get your meal half-off!

The giant anthropomorphic singing dishes were way too good to Zack. They knew just as well as he did that this particular special was more for the sake of letting the kid meet people.

[OCD up! The OOC thread has an important note on the dishes, for those of you not yet in the know!]

Hey, the specials board was very inviting. ... Jak wasn't so sure how the tell a story part was going to work, but he was getting on the hungry side after a morning spent messing around the beach (listen, you got hungry with a metabolism like his) and, well.

He'd just give it a shot.

Jak didn't as much poke his head in as walk, calmly and (in his estimation) heroically in through the doorway. He put one hand to his hip, and grinned. He'd arrived.

That was a lot of talking.

Jak couldn't tell. Jak was embarrassingly familiar with people who talked like that, so he figured it was normal, rubbing the back of his head with a lightly puzzled - if smiling - expression on his face.

He padded into the cafe proper on Zack's instruction, making a gesture with his hand that was meant to imply that everything had been awesome so far, truly. (Hey, some of the people here were picking up on the way he communicated; not that it was such a big issue back home, since most people tended to intuit what he wanted anyway, but after walking down to the airport shuttle from where the gate had dumped him, Jak was a little wary. People had stared)

As it turned out, people had the same reaction to a kid with equally gravity-defying hair, giant ears, and wrappings for shoes around his feet. Oh, and the goggles. People had been weird about the goggles.

Jak didn't get that. His goggles were useful. And cool.

Jak's face showed an awful lot of consideration at Zack's idea, and then he raised a single finger. He could do with that, actually. Cake sounded really good! He rubbed his stomach - he was really, really hungry.

Seriously. Being an eco channeler meant you burned a lot of energy in any given day, even without the eco.

Turtle hadn't really talked to Zack and what seemed like forever; meeting the newbies also made her realize that she definitely couldn't forget about her old friends, either! She surprisingly had some time on her hands today, as well, so there she was, bouncing into Cafe Fina.

"Heeeeeeey, Zaaaack."

Okay, the hug completely caught Turtle off guard, which meant she was ripe for the glomping, but it was definitely not the thing she was about to complain about. There a slight grunt from impact, a little bit of a laugh, and a light return of it.

"Hi to you, too," she said wryly with a grin, but then there was slight boggling. "You missed it, seriously? And really? Cake? What kind?"

AS IF IT MATTERED. Turtle hadn't had lunch yet, and cake was an excellent lunch.

Turtle definitely had to frown a little at that. "So long as you're feeling better now," she said, definitely sympathizing. "And, by the way, chocolate raspberry cake sounds incredible and now I must have it."

It was a yawning Momoko that stumbled into the cafe. "Hi Zaaaaaack! On my first day here I came through a really cool portal and met a giant singing robot alien named Bumblebee who doesn't go here anymore and found out my roommate was a boy. Can I have cake and maybe a hug?"

Momoko hugged him hard. She missed hugs, okay?

"That was my first day here ever, and it was actually pretty awesome. Yesterday was just plain weird. Even for this place! My friend came back from vacation looking totally different but still he's the same person inside even if he looks like a grownup, and then later I walked in on my roommate and had to spend the night somewhere else and now I'll never be able to look her in the eyes again." She yawned. "Can it be a big piece of cake?"

"I have to choose? Aw! Then chocolate, I guess. It feels like a chocolate day." Momoko smiled. "So how was your first day? And did you have fun at the picnic?"

This was a bad idea. Except that conversation the other day made her wonder if anywhere in town had decent falafel, and moreover, she hadn't been out trying most of the local food establishments. It was a novelty, having time to cook.

"Hi," she said uncertainly. "Does it have to be a good story? I have a couple of stories, but they're not all that ... eventful."

"Okay," Alex said, nodding. "I ... got here, found a place that was renting apartments -- luckily they had one that was furnished, because none of my stuff was here yet. Then I went to the bar, and drank, and met someone who was a dead ringer for an old coworker. Even sounds like her. We chatted some, and then I went back to my apartment and went to bed. Riveting, isn't it?"

"I did it twice," she huffed. "Same person. Thought she was Abbie, both times. She has to think I'm an idiot. She just -- looks so much like her. I know it happens a lot, and there's that old joke about everyone having a twin, but the same voice, that's just weird."

She gave him a wry smile. "I didn't want to be here, anyway, so it seemed a lot worse than it was. At least they had furnished apartments. I was seriously wondering if I'd have to sleep on the floor."
