Luke's Diner, August 31 (Monday)

There were new kids in town, which meant that Lacey got to work extra early today in order to get the diner shined and polished within an inch of its life . . . driving the dishwasher to despair with her silverware-related demands.

She didn't care. There was no excuse for those dishes to have spots on them today, and she'd just . . . help him find counseling for it afterward or something, if it came to that.

Because the glare of sunlight off the front of the cash register makes it hard to see Lacey, or something.

Because the glare of sunlight off the glass of the dessert case makes it hard to see any of the other workers except Lacey.

You poor thing.

Lacey couldn't polish this within an inch of its life, but there is tinsel around the edges. Be afraid.

Also, OMG, my entire respiratory system hates everything today. The air quality here is horrendous 'cause of the GIANT FIRES TRYING TO EAT MY CITY.

There had been a Sex Ed class and another class with Beka Bloody Cooper in it and there were what seemed like hordes of newbies, but it still was Monday, and that meant the George was in the regular booth and wondering what type of milkshake to get.

Some time during lunch, Kyle approached the counter to talk to Lacey. "Lacey? Can I ask you a question?" he asked.

So! He'd managed to get through Sex Ed without melting into a puddle of embarrassment (something that could even be literally possible where he was concerned, someday). That was good! Especially after the weekend and Sookie's brother's offer of naked women pictures.

"I think I may need two milkshakes," Bobby declared dramatically as he flopped down.

"Why?" Kyle asked, sliding in after Bobby. "I mean, I'm always for an extra milkshake, but you sound like there's a reason behind it."

"T'make sure he doesn' melt in embarrassment still," George suggested teasingly. Easier to tease now that there weren't any lasses about.

"I could, you know," Bobby said reproachfully. No, no he couldn't. Not until someone poked more at his brain at least.

"Don't unless you can find a bucket to melt into," Kyle suggested, still not getting it. "You guys were embarrassed because of class?"

"Tisn't th' class as much as th' lasses in it!" George protested. "Ye shouldn' be talkin' about tha stuff afore lasses!"

Bobby would've been fine with girls in the class if they hadn't outnumbered the guys two to one. "Well," he mused, "I guess it makes sense that they'd want to know, um, things too." Oh sure, now that he was somewhat removed from the situation he was fine with it. See how long that lasted once they were back in the classroom.

"Okay, I don't get it. Why does everyone freak out over girls? They're just girls."

"Tisn't that - " George had to think for a moment. "At home, ye wouldn't talk about such wit' th' lasses unless they were yer sisters. Or if ye were canoodlin' with one. Th' lasses get taught by th' priestesses of the Great Mother. An' th' priestesses don' be likin' th' lads peekin' in."

George - actually knew that from experience. Oops.

"Tisn't right to have 'em all together like that."

"Hey, there --" It was one of what Lacey had come to think of as the Wee Boys' Club, or something along those lines (Lacey's wording was much less pithy), but she actually wasn't sure which one of them it was.

"Of course you can. What's the question?"

Tim had to get up early to catch a portal to New Jersey. But first, breakfast.

"Morning." he yawned. "How's the coffee today?"

"I don't freak out over girls," Bobby insisted. It was sort of true. He freaked out over the possibility of dating girls.

Lacey stared at him, like the answer to the question should be obvious. Which to her, of course, it was. Always. Like a goldfish in a bowl, ~~the little plastic castle was~~ people who weren't a hundred percent confident in the quality of her coffee were a surprise every time.

"Fantastic, of course." Oh, god, blow to the self-esteem! Somewhat frantically, she went on, "And fresh. Always. Tell you what, if it's not up to your standards it's on the house, okay?"

The inside of Lacey's head was a Very Melodramatic Place sometimes.

Tim had pretty loose standards about coffee. It was the caffeine content that was truly important. "I'm sure I'll agree that it's fantastic." he assured her. If nothing else he hoped it would stop her from staring at him like that.

"Could I get some eggs too? Scrambled?"

"Oh, it will be." Yes, she sounded slightly manic. Yes, it was over the top. No, there wasn't a thing to be done about it, sadly, because Lacey was already hurrying to put a brand new pot of coffee on to brew. Hey, that ought to stop the staring, right? "Eggs? Scrambled? Absolutely. Anything else with that?"

"Uh, yeah. Some bacon please. How long have you worked here?"

"Eggs. Bacon. Got it," Lacey said hurriedly, slapping a guest check onto the counter for the kitchen guys. "Over a year now? Almost two? Oh, gosh. Where does the time go?"

Tim shook his head and chuckled. "God knows. A few years ago I went to the school up on the hill. I worked here then."

"You know, you're the second person who's said something like that to me," Lacey said, thinking of Irulan. "It makes me worry that I'm going to go home for a visit, and end up being able to come back here and collect retirement."
