Magic Box, Thursday, 9/3

Tara opened the shop after Ethics class and went straight for a certain book. If she and Tony really were going to practice locating spells, she wanted to be good at them.

Eventually, after she'd made the ball of light zap around the room looking for her a few times, she felt confident enough to send it to find Mr. Moxy. The kitten was very confused by the new toy he couldn't quite grab.

The Magic Box was open.

If you can get her attention away from magic and cute kitten. Both are powerfully distracting.

Diana was beginning to get a bit of a routine. This was not a good thing. "Kitty." She commented, coming in with Samuel in her arms.

"Mr. Moxy," Tara said, sending the light off toward an opposite wall. "He comes to work with me sometimes. I think he gets bored up in the room with Nyx."

The kitten in question trotted over to sniff Diana's shoes and peer up at Samuel.

Diana glanced down at the kitten and put Samuel down on the floor. "Play nice." "It's cat." Samuel complained. "So are you." Diana pointed out. "Is he yours?" Diana asked Tara.

Giiiiiive Tara a minute.

"Your cat talks."

Diana sighed. "Yes, he does. Most cats just don't think we're important enough to tak to." On the floor, Samuel was now poking at the other cat with a paw.

"So Samuel is slumming?" What, it kind of made sense. Tara giggled, albeit nervously. Talking cats were weird.

Mr. Moxy responded to the poking by sniffing the paw, then poking back.

Diana snorted. "Totally and completely."

Samuel glanced up Diana, completely out of his league.

"I h-hope the other kitties aren't mean to him for it," Tara ~~who lost this ping, sorry~~ mused. "Y'know, 'oh, you talk to people, I can't share a litterbox with you anymore'."

"The only other cat he interacts with is my sister's, and he talks to." Samuel tried to hide behind Diana's leg. "Oh come on, he's not that scary." "He's eighteen!" Samuel said with a lot of awe in his voice.

"He's not even here," Tara pointed out, and dear god she was talking to a cat.

Mr. Moxy meowed and tried to climb up Tara's skirt.

"He's Austin. He doesn't have to be here." Samuel explained. Diana rolled her eyes. "I don't even ask."

At some point during his exploration, Eric ended up in the Magic Box.

"... no top hats?"

He hadn't quite figured out that magic was real here.

Tara blinked at the boy, not understanding the reference. "Imperial Brim's d-down the street that way."

"Yeah, but this is a magic shop," Eric said. "I expected top hats and canes and silk scarves."

"Oh!" Tara said. "It's not that kind of magic. This is, uh, more spell supplies and books. Herbs."

"Spelling books?" Eric asked, totally misunderstanding her.

"... books of spells," Tara explained more slowly, trying to work out if he was joking or not. "For witches. There's a shelf for beginners over that way."

"Witches? Like pointy black hats and warts on their noses witches?"

Oh, Eric. You have so much to learn.

Well, today he was going to learn what a glare from a pissed-off witch would look like. Tara might be meek, but there were things you did not say to her.

"You know, those are really harmful stereotypes."

"Why? It's not like witches are real," Eric said.

"Uh, yeah, I'm a witch ..." Tara said. "I'm pretty sure I'm real."

A less patient woman with Tara's powers would have telekinetically thrown something at his head. She was not far from that.

Cue Eric blinking. "You are?"

Tara nodded, brushing her hair back. "That's why I work here? And do I look all warty?"

"No, you're really pretty," Eric said. "Please don't turn me into a frog."

"First, that's a stereotype too," Tara explained. She had buckets of patience, apparently. "Second, even if I could, I wouldn't. Th-that's an abuse of magic. Wiccans don't do things like that."

"And, uh, thank you." It never hurt to thank someone for a compliment.

"So witches are just nice, normal people?" Eric asked.

He considered that for a moment and then smiled. "Hey, you busy tonight? Maybe we can go get a burger."

"Well, uh, most of them are, yeah. There's a meeting Wednesdays if you're really interested," Tara said, then considered him.

First, he was a guy who had asked her out. That never happened.

Second ... he was a guy who had asked her out.

"Oh, sorry, I don't think that's a good idea."

Eric shrugged. Rejection seldom phased him.

"What kind of meeting?"

He might have mental images of skyclad people dancing under a full moon.

"People who use magic all hang out and talk about what we could do to help the school," Tara answered, still a little dubious about the guy in general. "There are usually cookies!"

She liked the cookies.

Cookies were good! "And people who don't use magic can come?"

"Um." Tara was thinking about this. It wasn't that she wanted to be rude or exclusive or anything. It was just that coven meetings were sacred, in their way, and she'd mentioned it expecting to be brushed off. Given he didn't think magic was real, and all of that.

She finally settled on, "Yeah. But I can't promise you won't get turned into a toad if you mention warts or broomsticks."

Eric nodded. "Okay, thanks!"

See, sometimes he can understand things.

"You're welcome," Tara said, hoping she'd gotten the message across. "So, uh ... anything I can help you with if we don't have top hats or card tricks?"

"No, don't think so," Eric said. "I'm just trying to get familiar with the town."

"Well, now you know what this shop is," Tara offered. "I'm Tara. N-nice to meet you."

"I'm Eric," he replied. "Nice to meet you."

And how long have you known that your girlfriend's Tinkerbell?
