The HELP WANTED - PREFERABLY OVER 18 sign still sat by the window. The Open sign had been flicked on the door. The dog was... perched next to it, his nose firmly deposited on the windowsill so he could keep an eye on everyone who came by, and alert the owner when needed.

The owner was currently dealing with several ragdolls (courtesy of one of his employees) that had been deposited across the store, courtesy of the third living being currently in the shop - being the child enthusiastically hurling one of the dolls repeatedly at the desk.

It was going to be a Day.

Who are here, even if one is slightly more exasperated than the other.

Jean was there today with a neatly wrapped gift (http://www.dollgenie.com/2008/2008-Black-Canary.jpg) for the birthday girl.

"Good morning Mr. Dayspring! Jan."

"Good morning, Jean," Nate said, as he was just leaning down to pick up one of the ragdolls. "How are you-- watch your step--?"

"I brought her a present if that's okay. I heard on radio it was her birthday."

"That's fine," Nate replied, as affable as he ever got. "Thank you, Jean. I'm sure she'll appreciate it." Or leave it lying all over the store, driving him insane... "Jan?"

The two-year-old's head perked up from behind the trashcan.

"Hello, Jan!" Oh, Jean was THAT person with small animals and children.

It was adorable, if you'd spent a part of your childhood at the hands of just those parenting techniques. "Jean's brought you a gift," Nate said, offering the girl a hand to get up, and to pad her slowly towards Jean.

Crouching down, Jean offered the box over to the little girl, giving her an encouraging smile.

"There you go."

Jan snagged it with weetiny hands and weetiny grace - which was to say no grace at all - laughing happily. She promptly flopped back onto the floor and started tearing away at the paper.

"You missed the party," Nate said, wryly. "Think we still have cake."

"Cake is very important to a birthday girl," Jean said with a grin. "I was wondering..."

"Wondering about the cake, or wondering about something else?"

Nate was just going to hover and make sure she didn't eat any tiny parts.

"If I knew someone else who needed some help with their powers---could they come here too?"

"I might be able to fit them into my schedule." Not that Cable was at all interested in twisting young minds.

Or having X-Force 2.0. This time with less homoerotic tension.

Maybe.

Bobby and Jono might find love, who knows?

"Great! I'll talk to them about it."

"And can I ask which 'they' we're talking about?" he asked, kneeling down to help Jan before she wound up chewing her way through half the doll.

"Well, Bobby. And Jonothon. Emma would probably laugh at me, but she needs help with this as much as me."

"Emma Frost?" These are Nate's eyebrows. These are Nate's eyebrows going up... "I'd be glad to meet your friends," he said, carefully muting his tone to obscure any recognition, "If they're willing to show up on a Tuesday or a Saturday."

Jean nodded in agreement. "She can be--" Polite words, Jean. "--She's unique."

"Unique sounds... like a good word for it."

Try not to look too sarcastic or dry there, Nate.

Once Jan's doll had been freed, he sat up. "If you feel she needs to pay me a visit," he said. Emma. Emma Frost.

"You know her?"

"There was a different-- nevermind."

No need to dip too far into the island's history. "I do pay attention to the radio broadcasts, Jean... they're a valuable source of information. If you know how to parse it."

"Sometimes," Jean said, rolling her eyes.

"Always," Nate corrected. "Well... if you sift out the chatter..."

"A lot of chatter."

"We're telepaths, Jean." He patted Jan on the head, then stretched the rest of the way up. "It's what we do... no matter the headache."
