The weather had turned, so Vida was making it quite clear to the vendors that orders should be in appropriate seasonal colors. Golds! Purples! Burgundies! Ambers! Vida adored the fall, in no small part because she was an Autumn.

Kate was on a walk through town with her camera in hand when she came across Covent Garden Flowers and remembered an idea she had had during her visit home.

She snapped a picture of the storefront and stepped in the shop.

Vida was just hanging up the phone as Kate entered. "Hello, sweet pea," she greeted her. "How can I help you today?"

There was a drag queen at the flower shop? Kate could deal with that.

"Hi," she smiled. "Do you have anything that's good for a dorm room? Like, something pretty that isn't going to die on me in a few weeks?"

"Pothos (http://i29.tinypic.com/23vxcev.jpg) is a hardy little plant," Vida said, pointing some out. "If you'd like a little more color, you might like an African Violet."

"A pothos would be probably good. I don't think my roommate would object to that," Kate noted. "I'm not sure what his feelings on actual flowers are."

"Sweet pea, if he thinks he's too manly for a pothos, then he's got issues," Vida said. "Just make sure the plant gets plenty of light, water it every few days, and it should be fine."

Kate laughed. "I think he's gonna be more worried about killing it than about his manliness. But he took good care of me when I was a cat, so we should be good. How much does it cost?"

"$5.99 for the smaller pot, $9.99 for the bigger pot, or $12.99 for the hanging pot," Vida said. She looked Kate over. "So you're another one who's turned into an animal? I'm hoping for a peacock myself if it happens to me."

"I think I'll take a small one," Kate said after a moment's thought, and then grinned. "Yeah. There's a lot of us. I don't think a peacock's out of the question, considering my roomie was a penguin, and I heard someone was a tiger cub this week."

"I am resolved to take it all in stride," Vida said, smiling back. "This place has just been so delightful that I won't let a few days as an animal scare me away."

Kate nodded. "That's probably the best attitude to have around here. It's a nice town, but ridiculously quirky," she noted. "Where are you from? If you don't mind me asking, it's just that with that attitude I kinda wonder whether you come from one of the weirder places."

"My last permanent address was New York City, pumpkin," Vida laughed. "And there's nothing we haven't seen there."

"Your New York has people turning into trees and cat food?" There was a hint of a smirk on Kate's lips. "I'm from Overland Park in Kansas, myself. We get very little weird stuff there."
