Irulan opened the communique Stilgar had sent to her. The message was brief:

Sietch Tabr thanks Princess Irulan for her gift. The children enjoyed the toys.

"Toys?" Irulan murmured in confusion, "But I sent hats not toys!"

After her only – if tiring – class of the day, Kate wandered around town. When she was passing Imperial Brim, she realized she'd never actually been to a hat shop, and now seemed to be as good a time as ever for a first visit. Besides, she kind of wanted a hat for the fall.

"Hello, Irulan," she smiled as she entered the shop.

"Kate!" Irulan greeted, putting away the puzzling communique. "How good to see you!"

Kate's smile got a little wider. "How have you been?"

"I'm well," Irulan replied. "Please, come sit." She gestured to the couch by the window. "Leto told me he joined you in your recent visit to your home?"

Kate took a seat on the couch, and nodded. "He did. It was... pretty interesting for everyone, I think."

Irulan chuckled, "Yes, it would be. Leto mentioned something about bowling. It seemed to have made an impression on him."

"Yeah, we went bowling with my family," Kate grinned. "It's kind of a Gregson family thing. We go bowling a lot. There was no way I was going to let him miss that."

"He did say something it being a family event," Irulan replied with a fond smile. "Perhaps Leto could persuade Ghani to join us bowling, you're invited to, Kate, if you like. I think it would be better if someone from this time period explain the rules to us."

"I think Leto knows the basics pretty well," Kate noted with a light smirk. "But I miss bowling when I'm here, so of course I wouldn't turn down an invitation."

Even if the idea of going bowling with the Atreides was somehow as terrifying as it was exciting.

"I'm certain he and Ghani know the basics somehow," Irulan said, feeling quietly proud of her step children. Other people always had an adverse reaction to her children's knowledge and though sometimes it disquieted her she never felt anything but proud of them.

Well, except when they used said knowledge to play pranks on her.

"At least Leto had a chance to learn them himself," Kate pointed out, smiling a little. She paused for a moment. "Although, I guess he probably cheated a little, with the learning process."

"Yes, he would have although I would wager he wouldn't call it cheating." She stood, "Would you like some tea, Kate?"

"Yeah, I doubt he would," Kate chuckled. "And I'd love some tea, thank you. I missed out on coffee in the morning."

Irulan stood-up and after a moment returned with a tray and a tea set. She set it down on the low table and proceeded to pour a cup for Kate.

"How do you take your tea, Kate? With milk?"

"Yes, a little milk's good, thank you," Kate nodded, smiling. And then tried to come up with something else to say, and failed.

She didn't feel like she had any particular reason to be nervous, but she found that she kind of was.

Irulan added the milk, Kate seemed nervous and wondered why that was.

"Have you been particularly busy this school year, Kate?"

"Not really. I was a lot busier at my old school. I'm only taking three classes right now," Kate replied with a light grin, taking her cup. "Two on Tuesdays, one on Mondays."

"That does seem like a light schedule," Irulan agreed with a smile. "Have you joined any clubs? I remembered joining a few back when I was a student."

"No, none of the clubs really seemed like my kind of thing," Kate said, shrugging with one shoulder. Pity the Smoking Club wasn't official. "What clubs did you join?"

"Goodness, that's so long ago I barely remember..." She paused to think, "I think I joined something that included 'Gremlin' in the wording, I couldn't be too sure it's been decades for me."
