Castiel didn't really own a great deal. The church, on the other hand, did, and what few possessions Castiel had were stored in the church, and as such, could quite easily be mistaken for church property.

Which for those in the know, might explain why it was that when Castiel went to retrieve one of the Supernatural novels he'd picked up last week, he discovered that several of them were missing.

This would not do. It would not do at all. If those books got into the wrong hands, it could do untold damage to the effort to prevent the apocalypse. Maybe. He thought.

Either way, he had to find them. The culprit had managed to nab Castiel's favorite one.

He began to search the church for clues.

Feeling somewhat bored, Layla had wandered into the church in the effort to find something useful to do.

"Hello?" she called out as she entered the main chapel. "Anyone home?"

Castiel peered out from the hallway where he was still searching for clues. "May I help you?"

He might've sounded slightly impatient.

"Hi," Layla said with a small wave. "Remember me? Girl who knows stuff. Thought I stop by and say hello."

"Of course I do," Castiel said. "I have an excellent memory." He was a little bit peevish, today, though he made an effort to appear normal. "It is . . . nice of you to visit."

"Something wrong?" Layla asked trying not to smirk. "You look a bit... anxious."

A lesser being might have pointed out that Layla, as one who "knows things", should already know what was wrong. Fortunately, Castiel was not a lesser being.

"It seems some items have been stolen," he hesitated for just a moment, "from the church."

"Books perhaps?" Layla teased in an oh-so-innocent manner.

"I am going to assume that you're not the culprit returning to the scene of the crime."

"That would be an accurate assumption," Layla said sitting down in a pew and putting her feet up. "Need any help?"

"This is not the first time I've had to investigate something." Mind you, last time he hadn't figured out the answer until well after someone was hospitalized after being beaten up by a demon, and nearly died once he had figured the whole thing out. But that didn't count. "I'm certain I'll be able to work it out on my own."

"Okay," Layla said with a shrug. "Mind if I keep you company while you look?"

"I will not try to stop you if you chose to stay." Castiel returned his careful gaze to the floor. Mildred would not be in to clean until tomorrow, so there was a possibility of finding some sort of track.

"Well that sounds like a warm and inviting invitation," Layla said sounding amused. "You should go into the greeting card business."

Castiel glanced back up, surprised. ". . . I'm not actually certain I would do well in such an arena."

"Probably should stick to giving sermons then," Layla said wryly. "It'll be easier that way."

"Yes." Wait, what? "What will be easier?"

"Relating to humanity," Layla said simply. "If you do hallmark cards then you're just stuck behind a desk writing quippy things. Work at the church and you have to talk to people."

Castiel nodded. She had an excellent point. "I've found that myself, as well. Though I try not to interrupt those who do not approach me themselves. For some faith is a . . . very private thing."

"You're the one who showed up at my shop the other week," Layla pointed out. "Sometimes it's good to get out. Mix it up with the little people."

There was a little chuckle to that. Yes, Layla thought she was funny.

Castiel nodded. "I've tried to make it a point to visit various businesses in town -- primarily to get a better sense of the place, but I've also met many interesting people."

"There's no shortage of that around here," Layla noted. "There's especially interesting people at Caritas at any given night."

"I hadn't realized the bar was so popular."

"It's a place of congregation," Layla explained. "Though there's more drinking and less praying."

"I admit, I do not understand the allure of alcohol."

"Well that just might not be for you," Layla commented. "Maybe in moderation."

"I have little need for ingesting liquids in the first place." Castiel shrugged. "Ones which inhibit the body's natural function seem . . . foolish."

"Depends on the situation," Layla shrugged. "And the amount really."

"I suppose I'll have to study it further to see the benefits."

"Just remember. Moderation," Layla said getting up to leave. "Just to avoid anything embarrassing."

Castiel wasn't actually certain he could get drunk, but nodded anyway. "I will proceed with due caution."
