The Gig: Thursday [9-17-09]

Helen was happily working at the Gig today. Once she got the stalls mucked out, the horses fed and groomed and all the tack cleaned, Helen planned to take a ride and relax out in the back with the horses.

The Gig is open!

Triela didn't have any particular desire to hang out with horses, but it was Thursday and it had been a while since she'd talked to Helen. "Hello!" she called as she approached.

Helen poked her head out. "Triela," she said with a smile. "How are you?"

"Not bad," Triela grinned. "How about yourself?"

She smiled. "I'm always good on Thursdays."

"The horses?" Triela asked.

She nodded. "Yes. I'd spend every day here if I could."

"What's stopping you?" Triela asked with a fond grin.

She shrugged. "I feel like I'm shirking work if I don't study as much as I can the rest of the time."

But her expression was wistful.

"You can't study here? At least part of the time?"

"Maybe." Helen considered that. "I wouldn't want to be in the way with the others who work here. I come early most mornings to muck out the stalls as it is."

"I suppose there is that. Though I suspect they wouldn't mind, really."

"Probably not," Helen admitted, then sighed. "But it would feel a bit like cheating, wouldn't it? Studying here where my mind wouldn't be solely on my work."

"True. If you are going to study it is worth doing properly."

Helen sighed. "Yes. Unfortunately. But never mind that. How are you doing?"

"Rather well. I got a new arm last weekend." She held the left one out to illustrate.

Helen blinked. "A new arm?"

It looked just like the old one.

"One of the advantages of beinug a cyborg, yeah."

"I... well... I suppose so," Helen said, though she didn't sound certain. Still, she could make her arm whatever she wanted, so who was she to quibble.

"It means that injuries aren't as permanent."

She nodded. "That's a good thing then. ... Were you... you must have been hurt badly..."

"Arm, leg, and eye. Well, and a bunch of torso damage, but they replaced that immediately."

"Doesn't it seem odd to you?" Helen asked.

"I guess in some ways? But for the most part it's just the way things are for me."

Helen nodded. "It is very different from any life I've heard of. Excpet perhaps Uquar's. Ravens ate out parts of his body while he was chained to a rock and he grew them back."
