Magic Box, Thursday, 9/17

Tara did not want to talk about why the little dudes in kilts kept calling her a hag. It was a term she could do without forever, thank you very much.

Eventually, most of them left the store, and she flopped behind the counter with a spellbook. She muttered to herself as she read the chapter on energy bolts.

The Magic Box was open.

Jak had absolutely no idea why he was staring up at the sign of this particular store, except that it looked marginally interesting (even if he did keep having to hold up his cheatsheet to read the letters. He was almost there, seriously). Eventually, his eyes were drawn to the door, and all the weird, cool stuff that seemed to be behind it.

Right!

He pushed open the door almost awkwardly, but strode in with confidence.

Hey! It was Pretty Girl Who Talks from the picnic. Jak's step became a little surer, and he waved at her as he walked towards one of the set-ups near her (and the counter).

You know, Samos did keep telling him he shouldn't touch Precursor technology, but funky artifacts on the island weren't necessarily Precursor tech, right? His hand hovered over something big and amulet-y.

'Bad juju' was the local equivalent of the technical terms Samos used to describe Misty Island, and look how well that had turned out.

Although in this case, the universe at large garnered rather a lot of luck from the fact that Jak, unfamiliar with the place and the vocabulary, was surprised enough by the almost-yelp to pull his hand back and shoot her a look that was an obvious question.

Whatnow?

... This was as good a time as any to try out his new flashcards. While Jak dug around his pocket for the right one (it was starting to get a little full) he looked... torn. Kind of? In the middle?

He finally found the new one Dinah had made for him earlier that day, and held it up.

Eco is energy, there's lots of types, I can use them to do stuff like running really fast, shooting fireballs, hit really hard.

... Neither Dinah nor Jak were in any way related to Shakespeare, no.

Jak really needed to figure out what this 'closed captions' thing was, and why people kept bringing it up. He was communicating more in a few weeks than he had in the past few years, though. That was a good thing.

He puzzled over the word 'magical' for a moment, but then again, that'd been over the store. So, yeah, sure. It was kind of like magic... using? He nodded to that effect.

The flashcard was promptly stuffed back in Jak's pocket. He had the one that involved asking her about her classes somewhere in there, but that would involve more messing around with the contents of his pocket than he really could without looking like a massive spaz.

Anyway, why would he disperse to go find Eco when he could lean over her shoulder (kind of. It was more of a respectful loom) and try and see what she was doing with the amulet?

Diana had decided to leave Samuel behind again for her weekly trip to the Magic Box. "What are you reading?"

Diana nodded. "Want help? Or a moving target?"

Diana walked over to glance at the book. "I suppose I could? If there was already electricity around I could use that or something."
