The Arms Hotel; Wednesday [ 09/23 ].

Valentine had been expecting a day like this for a while now, so it didn't surprise her that she'd woken up that morning as a boy, but it did take some getting used to. And she thought maybe she'd look a little more like Ender, or Peter, but it was kind of nice to know that she still stood as herself under the duress of new temporary chromosomes and a different center of gravity.

She'd expected Gunther would be used to this sort of thing, too, so she was a little surprised that he was surprised to not see someone more Valentine-looking come into work today. But she realized that she could use this to her advantage, explaining that she was the new guy, Valentino, and when Gunther asked if she spoke German in German, she just looked at him with confusion and said, "Gesundheit?"

Which meant he left her alone and she settled behind the counter with a book.

Ender had spent the morning being acquainted with the new bug going around, so it was with a wry if understanding smile on his face that he walked into the hotel that morning to see how Val was holding up.

"I'm sorry," he said, lightly, "Here I was looking for my sister..."

"Look harder, then," Valentine said. "No sisters here."

"You could be hiding her under the desk," he said, walking up to the furniture in question. "But then I think the cook would probably be a lot more pissed off."

"Actually, that's why the cook's so pissed," Valentine said. "He found out we used her for the steaks instead of beef."

"I don't think I appreciate my sister being called a cow," he said, and leaned onto the desk. "But I don't think I'm from the right culture to get medieval about it."

"If you were to get medieval about it," Valentine said, "then I'd be paying her a compliment. Some meat on her would mean surviving the winter, and a cow was always a good thing to have back then, besides."

"A cow was a priceless commodity," he said, lightly, "Women twice as much. Either way, it's irrelevant -- having fun, Val?"

"A blast," Valentine admitted with a smirk. "I would complain about how you boys handle having something like this between your legs all the time,"--nice subtly, Val--"but then I'm reminded of monthly periods and it doesn't seem such a burden."

"Until you smack yourself with it."

Just as subtle, our Ender.

"Do you have this problem often, Ender?" Valentine asked, but at least she didn't continue on to suggest that maybe he have Ben help him with it next time.

"Not since I was four years old," he said, with a laugh. "I'm just sharing copious years of experience with you."

"Yeah, well," Valentine waved a little hand, "you've got some years to catch up on, anyway."

"Is that a request for me to regress?"

Jack had figured out what was going on from the confusion in the lobby, and decided this would be a good day to go find a Valentine to bother.

He tilted his head at the young man behind the counter. "If you're Valentine," he decided, "you look quite a bit like yourself, except with different hair. And other things, obviously."

Valentine looked frankly back at Jack, save for the familiar quirk in the corner of her mouth. "I think I should be insulted by that comment."

Jack rolled his eyes. "Please, I didn't say you weren't still pretty."

"No," Valentine snorted a laugh. "You just I look like a boy. But I guess it's going to be less detrimental to my confidence knowing that at least I'm pretty."

"I like boys too, though," Jack pointed out. "And no, you don't look anything like a boy normally. If anything, you're a girlish boy right now."

... he possibly was not the best for a female ego.

Luckily, Valentine had plenty of ego, and very little of it had anything to do with the fact that she was female. That, for the most part, was just a detail, which was probably why this seemed to go so easily in stride.

"I look," she stated, "like my brothers."

Which, yes, was a nice little comment on their own femininity.

"I don't know if I would have said that," Jack said thoughtfully, since he'd always thought the family resemblance between Val and Ender was mostly a matter of coloring. "A bit. You might look more like the oldest one than you do like Ender."

"Peter," Valentine offered. "He's got a sharper face. Of course, I don't think Ender's yet grown out of his baby face."

"I know his name, it just feels weird using it when I haven't met him," Jack said, and was distracted for the moment. "-- is he coming for parents' weekend, or is he too busy running the world?"

Valentine snorted again. "Hopefully too busy ruling the world," she said. "I know for a fact it's still in a state where the leader of it doesn't need to be traipsing off to visit his little siblings in high school. Our actual parents might come, but I'm not sure; they're a little...irritated with Ender for never writing. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if someone from the IF ended up showing up, trying to pretend not to check up on us."

"Oh, what, they just happened to be in Maryland and, my, fancy seeing the Wiggins here?" Jack asked skeptically. "Well, if you do get a guest I'd be curious to meet them."

He added, "I think Sebastien's coming."

"Well, they sent us both here, so if they try to be surprised that we're here while they're in the area, they're worse than I thought." But the IF didn't really interest Valentine that much; she tilted her head a little at Jack. "He's your guardian, right?"

"And if they sent you here and they show up, it's checking up no matter what they call it, isn't it?" Jack asked, mostly rhetorically. "... and yes."
