So.

She was sixteen today.

She was also at work, which was a bit of a bummer, but Cal had said he was throwing her a party tomorrow evening so that was something to look forward to, anyway. Even if she’d, like, told people the right-wrong day because, hello, her birthday was today and he hadn’t told her earlier that he was changing the date. Maaan. Ino gave him points (a lot of points), though, for telling her beforehand. And, you know, having a rationale that made sense.

However, the thing that really took the cake?

Was the fact that she was spending her sixteenth birthday as a boy thanks to the stupid island.

Thanks, Fandom. Thanks a lot.

Who is, well, sulky.

And the girliest boy ever.

He didn't even announce himself. He just came in, put the little tray stuffed with dango, onigiri with umeboshi, daifuku, and a small bowl of miso soup on the counter next to the plum green tea.

Then he placed a little wrapped package (http://discountweddingworld.com/library/PearlFlowerVineSet.jpg) on the counter next to it.

"Happy Birthday."

Ino watched this minor production over the edge of her notebook and had to admit that it made her feel better.

It was pretty hard to be sulky when someone came in and said that, after all.

So he was getting a smile, as she reached for a hug. "Thank you," she said, grinning a little bit. "And hiii."

And of course he hugged her. Kissed her hair too.

"Hello to you as well. And you're very welcome."

"Isn't this a mean joke to play on me today?" she asked, because really that was her main complaint of the day. And maybe clinging a bit before leaning over to inspect her wrapped present.

Eeeee present.

"It's a terrible joke to play," he agreed, "but you're still you and it's still your birthday, so you shouldn't let the island win by not having a good time of it anyway," he said, happy to let her hold on.

"Cal's moved my party 'till tomorrow," she informed him. "Which, I guess, is good 'cause then I'll know everyone there, don't you think? So that's something to look forward to still."

Which was good to know.

"I suppose I'll have to put the cake in the freezer. For the best, really, considering how I've made it."

"Why can't I have cake now?" she asked plaintively, half teasing.

Half, well, wanting cake.

"Because it's a special (http://www.cakeflowers.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/cake-flowers-300x300.jpg) cake for your birthday. And you have something sweet to eat here."

She grinned up at him.

"You're spoiling me," Ino said, tugging off the wrapping on her gift rather than continue to mope over cake. "Oooooh!"

Someone liked her present, yes. Quite a lot. So he was getting more clinging.

"I am certainly not. A cake should be made for one's birthday" which was something that had been in practice even at Kiamo Ko, "and if I can make you an especially nice cake, then all the better."

But he had to grin at the clinging and the ooooing. He was glad she liked it.

"It's gorgeous," she bubbled, holding it up carefully to inspect it. While clinging. She was talented, here.

"Totally spoiling." And Ino was really really not minding.

"I'm just glad you like it. The flowers made me think of you."

"Gee," she said, laughing. "I wonder why?"

Oh Ino.

"Help me put it on?" Yes, even if she was a boy today.

He rolled his eyes in pure innocence there before stepping back to help her put it on.

She was just going to have to grin up at him, and lift her hair out of his way.

It was funny, really, that she was a boy and still had to do that.

Considering Liir's own mess of curls, he didn't think much of it. Instead, he clasped the necklace on carefully and patted it down so it wasn't kinked at the back before stepping around to take a look.

"Very nice, I think."

Yeah yeah, she was totally beaming at him.

And wondering if Cable-san had a little mirror kicking around anywhere.

...though on second thought, that was kinda hilarious. She couldn't picture him with a wee mirror.

"You're awesome, you know that?"

He smiled, glad she was pleased, that he'd been able to brighten her day.

"I've been known to think well of myself from time to time," he said.

"Time to time is better than none at all," she said, leaning to poke him gently. "So I'm glad for that too."

He laughed at that.

"One does try to improve."

Perhaps getting barked at every once in a while was good for him?

"Does one also have time to sit and chat for awhile?" she asked artlessly. "Or is one so busy at work that one must flee promptly?"

One made the sentence structure sound weird to her. Huh.

"Since some of the pieces of your cake can chill as long as I like, I have the time," he said with a little grin.

"Hurrah," she said, setting aside the box and reaching for the tea. "Centurion's going to give me more work to do, did you know that?"

He shook his head.

"Centurion would be..."

He hadn't heard about this, not in person anyway.

"He teaches Infantry Tactics," she said, making a face at him. "Max-something. His title's Centurion."

So Ino pretty much used it as his name, yeah.

"I'm one of his TAs, and he's giving me strength building exercises."

He nodded slowly as he considered that.

"Interesting. Did you ask for it?"

...he knew his sister.

"...yeah," she admitted sulkily.

A beat.

"But then he was all 'you know, I've got more if you're not dead yet from training' and how was I supposed to refuse that?"

"Well, if it was anyone else, I'd say you could have, but I know you. Are you at least enjoying it?"

...

"...sort of," she admitted sheepishly. "It's a lot more like home, training that heavily."

Home, he knew, was a complex word for some people, for most people, including Ino. He'd seen her come back from her home in good moods, bad moods, satisfied, deeply disassatisfied...

"Is it helping you?"

Ino considered that.

"I think so?" she said, picking her words. "I mean, I'm used to it--so it's good."

Look, he didn't know Ino's schedule well enough to know where she'd be today, so when he hadn't been able to find her in the dorms, he'd gone to J,GoB to grab something, and then gone looking around town for her.

The poor girl-turned-guy who was working the counter at Mooby Land had seemed so disappointed that he wasn't there to see her.

"Ino! Hey!" he exclaimed, pleased that he'd finally found the right place.

Ino blinked at him.

"Is it that obvious?" A beat. "And hiii."

"I've never met anyone with eyes the same color blue as yours ~~as the player justifies her just-out-of-bed-brained ping~~," Bobby replied, because he actually did notice these things sometimes.

"You mean my fabulous hair totally passed by your notice?" she teased, actually rather charmed by that answer. "And that's a compliment, so thank you!"

"Yes, well, uh. Welcome," Bobby mumbled, running a hand through his hair. "I think maybe the island must've overheard our conversation last night," he said. "Because seriously, timing, what the hell?"

She had to laugh at that.

"It just lives to make people regret talking," she declared. "I wonder if we wished for money to fall if it would oblige?"

Ino could be hopeful, yes.

"Hey, island, if you're listening? Could it rain money sometime?" Bobby said, tilting his head towards the ceiling as he addressed the island. "Anyway! I brought you something. Well, the pictures as promised, but also something else."

Ino looked interested.

"Something shiny?" she asked, brightening further. "You didn't have to, but I am all for surprises."

"Well, it's more in the realm of sugary than shiny," he told her apologetically. "Which I hope is okay!" He said as he put the box on the counter.

"Sugary is totally okay," she assured him, reaching for the box.

And making cheerful squeaky noises at what was inside. SO CUTE.

"Eeeee! Lookit how little they are! Thank you!"

"You're welcome," Bobby grinned at her. "I mean, cake's traditional and all, but I figured you'd probably have enough of that at your party, so. Cookies. To be different."
