Magic Box | Thursday | 9.24

Happy not to be a boy anymore, Tara was still thinking about envy and rumors when she got to the Magic Box after Ethics class, and she started flipping through one of her spellbooks. Maybe there was some magic way to tell if someone was lying ...

Though she was also looking for Changing genders, ways to prevent.

The Magic Box was open, and a teddy bear was posed on a broomstick near the front door for her history project.

I cannot stop you!

She can be distracted.

Diana was way too perky for the morning. It was almost against the laws of nature. Samuel was asleep in her arms. "Hey. You didn't make it to magical reserves yesterday."

"A-a-a-actually I was there," Tara corrected, a little taken aback by the perkiness. "I, um, I was a boy."

"You weren't?"

Diana paused mid step. "Suddenly, a lot of things make a lot more sense."

Tara laughed. "You seriously hadn't noticed all the strange boys yesterday?"

Diana shrugged. "There was a lot more than usual?"

"You're so observant," Tara teased.

"Extremely." Diana confirmed. "Which guy were you?"

"Um, kind of short, spiky brown hair, Ramones shirt ..." Tara said. "I had the same eyes, at least."

She tucked a stray piece of hair back into a barret. "It was weird. I, uh, I don't even date boys, so I really didn't wanna deal with one's equipment all day."

"Oh. Oh." Diana said, finally making the connection to yesterday. "Uh, don't date boys because of opportunity, or don't date boys at all? Cause, uh, I'm of the later. Well, just don't ask my cat."

"Uh, a little of both?" Tara said carefully. At home she was Donny Maclay's weird little sister who stuttered; guys weren't beating her door down. "But I think I'm ... the latter. Like you."

Which was not asking Diana out, and she went pink.

"From somewhere where that's not really popular?" Diana took a guess at the turning pink. And gave herself a half star for at least guessing that one right.

"Pretty much." It had more to do with Tara's family than her particular small town. "You?"

Diana shrugged. "I never gave a - a care about what people in town thought. They kind of avoided my family anyway." For good reason. "My family deals with Hell, werewolves, and run away minivans on a daily basis. Me being a Lesbian is such a small blimp on their radar it doesn't even register. As long as I don't set anything on fire or sink any island - and remember to call home-, they're happy." It hadn't even been her fault. The first time.

Tara leaned forward on the counter.

"Your whole family deals with demons and stuff?" She totally thought minivans were evil, shut up. "That's -- to do with your magic stuff, right?"

Diana walked over to perch on the counter instead of just randomly walking around the store. And minivans were evil. "Yup and yup. Family business. Good pay, great opportunity to travel, exciting work, uses my unique skill set."

"Guess that's what you're doing when you graduate." Okay, Tara was only a little envious.

"As soon as I get my diploma, I'm on full Keeper status." Diana said proudly. "No magical schools or jobs back home?"

"I haven't really looked," Tara admitted. "Not really schools, but ... jobs? Maybe? I'm only in tenth."

Diana shrugged. "I still have two years of not quite public education to go through."

Tara grinned. "S-so we both have some time to figure it out," she said. "... hey, are you going to Karla's slumber party tonight?"

"Hunh? Oh, uh, yeah. Probably. I'll uh, see you there then?" Very, very eloquent there Diana.

"Absolutely," Tara confirmed, also winning points for eloquence. "... Bye, Diana. Samuel."

Jack looked around the store with a critical eye. "Anything in here that can be used as a weapon?"

"... what?" Give Tara a minute. She's checking if she sleepwalked into work at Wellspring.

It doesn't seem like she did, so:

"Like, a weapon, weapon?"

"No, the OTHER kind of weapon -- YEAH, a weapon, weapon. C'mon, any sort of magic spell or potion or something that'll... oh, I dunno. Shoot down an alien spaceship?"

Tara was giving the man an 'I am scared of you' kind of look.

"Um. Is, is one attacking? 'Cause, uh ... maybe. I haven't really l--looked for one."

Jack sighed and waved his arms in a "don't worry, I'm not scary" sort of gesture. "No, no, not like that. Just, you know, looking for anything helpful."

"Oh. Uh." Tara considered. "Well, can you do magic? Or d-do you need something sort of, uh, 'plug and play'?"

Jack grimaced and drew in a breath. "Well, not magic, per se, not as such... No. No, I can't. Where I'm from, magic doesn't exist."

"Hmmm," Tara said again, and went quiet. "See, I-I could try to sell you a spell and the ingredients, but, um, I don't know if I could make anything big enough to do anything against a spaceship. It would be like throwing a snowball at a polar bear."

Jack scratched his head. "Yeah, and we've already got guns for that. So... No Ark of the Covenant or Holy Grail in your back room, or anything like that?"

Tara shook her head. "Y-you could call Mr. Winchester and ask," she said, and slid one of John's business cards across the counter to Jack. "He'd probably k-keep track of anything, uh, apocalyptic."

"ANTI-apocalyptic," Jack corrected. "Good guy, over here."

"Anti-apocalyptic," Tara echoed, with a slight smile. "But, uh, he's still the guy to call if you want to try to buy big heavy firepower. I'm j-just the girl who works here Thursdays." She waved vaguely at her nametag. "Tara."

"Pleased to meet you, Tara," Jack told her. "I'm Jack, the guy who saves the planet from aliens. See you around."

"Absolutely," Tara said. "And, uh. Sorry I couldn't help."
