Magic Box | Thursday | 10.01

Tara was thoughtful as she got to work today. The Hutt's palace was going to be in her nightmares for a while.

She didn't expect any visitors, but she put together a window display of beginner's magic books, jewelry, herbs and crystal balls for other people's families. It seemed both harmless and like what parents would expect to see.

The Magic Box was open.

And there was a Diana, right on schedule. "Getting ready for parent's weekend?" She guessed.

Tara nodded. "I f-figure nobody can hurt themselves too much if we steer them to these things," she explained. "Last week I, I had an amulet out and Jak almost grabbed it."

She adjusted a stack of books. "How do those look?"

"Who's Jak?" Diana asked, only mildly curious about the answer. "They look very parent presentable." She paused. "You have any coming?"

"Blond boy, big ears, really quiet," Tara said, also not overly concerned. "And p-parent-presentable's exactly what I was going for." Then she shook her head.

"M-my mom's not really healthy enough to travel this far. Do you?"

"Parent presentable achieved." Diana nodded in what she hoped was an assured way. "And yeah, my sister and her cat. Samuel's already hiding under my bed. Er, um, what's wrong with your mom?" That almost had tact.

"Ovarian cancer," Tara said. "She ... sometimes she feels better than others. And m-my dad probably wouldn't want to come."

Which wasn't tactful, but was true. (Tara hoped, anyhow.) "S-sorry to be a downer."

"I'm sorry." Diana said with some feeling behind it. "It's totally okay, I did ask. I er, want me to send Samuel to you during the weekend? He'll get to escape Austin and you'll get a cat." She was aiming for a joking smile there. She might have missed by a bit.

Just a little bit, though seeing her smile did make Tara feel slightly better.

"I dunno," she said throughtfully. "We already have Nyx and mr. Moxy in the room. Think we could have a kitten playdate?"

"I wonder what would happen if we put all the Fandom cats in a room together?" Diana wondered. "World domination? Tuna three times a day? Cat operational can openers?"
