Our Lady of Fandom, Thursday

"It has come to my attention," Castiel said, "that this weekend is 'Parents Weekend' at the school, and many of your parents, siblings, and close friends will be coming to visit. I understand that this may be a stressful time for some of you. Family is not always the easiest thing to deal with. They have expectations of you that perhaps you've realized you cannot or do not wish to meet. They may know things about you that no one else knows, and enjoy telling those things to other people. However uncomfortable they may make you, however, family, be it by blood, marriage, or one that you've chosen for yourself in some other manner, is the most important thing."

Awwww. That was almost sweet.

"If you're very lucky," he continued, "your family will not turn against you, murder your brothers and sisters, and attempt to end the world."

Or not.

He went on to talk about how he and his fellow angels were also family, under their father, the Lord. How this included Lucifer, the favorite child who went black sheep, started a war, and was banished to Hell. How the family had chosen sides, how those that Castiel had seen as his closest siblings might decide to side with Hell even after all these years. How the Lord was absent, off doing something else, and his other siblings decided in his absence that they knew best and would bring on Paradise on Earth, even at the cost of millions of human lives. How Castiel himself, all alone, had chosen to side with humanity in the battle, and quite possibly had been banished here to Fandom, to a world where his family was seemingly absent, as a result, never to know if his own world even still existed, if his family hadn't managed to all kill themselves off along with humanity and the world, like children fighting over a broken toy.

Perhaps the lesson of this sermon was "and you thought your family had problems." Or maybe it was "be nice to your brothers and sisters and maybe they won't stab you in the back." Either way, it was . . . unlikely that he'd managed to allay any fears the congregation might have of the idea of their family coming to visit.

[ooc: *facepalms* I swear, he just goes off on those tangents on his own. OCD on its way is up, hurray!]

Some deep, dark part of Arthur's mind pointed out that his father was well capable of killing his sister one day, but it was the deep, dark part that he tended to cover up with shiny plates of duty and nobility and absolute prattishness.

So Arthur, in his pew, was left only with the confusion of wondering whether he should be in awe of the angel's tale, or wondering why on Earth he was giving them such a pity party.

In the end, religion won out.

To Chuck, this further cemented the fact that Castiel needed to get laid. But this whole thing did kind of make him feel better about his own family. At least Chuck didn't have any siblings that wanted to kill him.

Well. Not in this universe, anyway.

Francine had come into church with a smile on her face, for once in the last few weeks.

Anybody who heard the not-very-churchtoned "PARENTS WEEKEND? Oh my God," would be able to guess when that disappeared.

Somebody had been a little busy this week.

She ought to be wearing the same look on her face that Katchoo was, since she knew darn well she was going to get yelled at sooner or later about Tuesday, but she was far too stuck on whimpering, "Parents' Weekend" again.

Arthur cleared his throat. "Yes, I heard that," he said, "Everyone heard that. Francine."

"That's why I moaned it quieter this time," she said, though hiding under a pew was once again looking like a viable option, yes. "My mother will be here. Unless she forgot. Maybe she forgot?"

No, Francine, your father forgot. You only wish your mother did.

You can pat him on the shoulder and say "there there", but he'll likely just look at you funny.

By the time Sam got to the church, Castiel's sermon was pretty much over. He wasn't usually a patient person, but he managed to wait until Castiel was alone before approaching him. "I need to talk to you," he said.

"Sam," said Castiel, looking entirely innocent and even perhaps vaguely concerned. "What can I do for you?"

The innocent look actually gave Sam hope for a few moments. "It's about Andy," he replied simply.

The concern became somewhat less vague . . . though perhaps less directed towards Sam and more directed towards the world in general.

"What about him?"

"What you told him about having demon blood in him - was that true?" Sam asked. He hadn't come up with a good reason for why Castiel would lie, but there were still a lot of things about angels that he didn't understand.

Castiel was really pretty sure that Sam didn't actually want to know the answer to that.

He was also learning that Sam wouldn't take "you don't want to know" for an answer.

Freaking Winchesters.

"It was Azazel, yes."

"Do you know if he did that to me too?" he asked, not about to let up when he was finally getting some answers, even if, no, they weren't the answers he wanted to hear.
