Wellspring Arms & Meditation Centre, Wednesday

Ino, after a night of without any outside influences, had lost most of the headache but hadn’t really slept better. She supposed it made sense that nightmares would go in... cycles, or something, of severity, but ugh, this sucked.

After fussing with the plants—because no way was she going to neglect them—Ino curled up in Cable-san’s chair and settled in to brood.

It was just that sort of day.

"Hey Ino," Hurley said, walking in. "Uhhh, I kinda wanted to apologize."

Ino blinked. Then raised her eyebrows at him.

"Apologize?" she echoed.

Nightmares translated over to memory of a goldfish, apparently.

"About how I acted at Homecoming," Hurley said. "Was kinda... not cool."

Ino opened her mouth, then paused, and mentally counted the days since Homecoming.

...

...that was not nearly as many days as it felt like it had been.

"...okay," she said, pushing her bangs out of her eyes. "You're forgiven."

Hurley gave her a thumbs up. Then he got worried.

"...you okay? You seem kinda quiet."

"Tired," she said, with a quick smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Bad dreams ain't real restful, you know?"

Ino shrugged a bit.

"Not much to be done 'bout it. I ain't going to take drugs for sleeping, not for this."

"Warm milk?" Hurley said. "Sheep counting?"

"...I'm not a toddler, Hurley," Ino said, with great patience.

Lucky man, if he'd suggested that to her yesterday... ow.

"I'll get over it. I did once already, geez."

"...yeah, well, they help me," Hurley said, pulling a face. "Sorry for trying to help."

Resisting the urge to snap--he was like a great dumb puppy, geez--Ino sighed.

"It's not the getting to sleep that's the problem," she said instead. "I know you were just trying to help."

"...oh, right," Hurley said.

The big dumb puppy thing was a pretty good assessment, really.

"Any reason the dreams are a problem? Like... did something happen or something?"

"No," she said, having convinced herself of that mostly. "At least, not recently. It's cyclical, or something, 'cause okay maybe they're..."

Fairly frequent.

"They're not normally as bad as they've been this week," Ino said instead, changing her mind at the last moment. "I figure it's just gotta be some weird subconscious thing."

That could die in a fire as far as she was concerned.

"Sorry to hear that," Hurley said. "Maybe you need a puppy."

He was joking, and he hoped this wouldn't backfire.

She snorted; half a laugh.

"I wouldn't have time to take care of one," Ino said, almost wistfully, "and when I go on missions--I don't always have time to alert anyone 'bout it."

"Yeah, that's a problem," Hurley said. "You and your super cool ninja missions."

Her lips twisted, it was almost impossible, unless you were looking for it, to notice that it wasn't really a small smile.

"Super cool, huh?" she echoed. "That's what you think?"

"Well, since you never really talk about them, I guess I kinda just have to imagine them being like video game ones," Hurley said. "Which probably isn't right at all. And you probably don't suck at dangling from ropes like I do."

"Playing a video game is a lot different from actually doing it," she noted, tucking hair behind one ear.

Ino chewed on her lower lip. "Anything you wanted me to talk 'bout? I mean--I don't 'cause it's my job, but some of it's talkable."

"Ummm," Hurley thought for a second, but he wasn't really sure. "I mean, only whatever you'd want to talk about, I guess."

"That's no fair," she said, "'cause I don't know what to say 'bout it. To me it's all old news."

Or stuff that she'd rather kill Hurley than tell him, but Ino wasn't going to inform him of that.

"Then that's cool," Hurley said. "I mean, you're a good friend and stuff, but it's not like you have to tell me everything, you know?"

"Besides," she said, with a shrug. "I'd rather you think they were super cool."

"Yeah, nothing like shattering my world view," Hurley said. "Like... Ninja dogsitting or something."

Ino glanced up at the ceiling and whistled deliberately tunelessly.

La la la.

At least that had been Sakura's team and not hers, geez.

"...Dude, no!" Hurley said, laughing. "Man, this is almost as bad as Harper suddenly dressing normally."

"Teamwork building exercise," she explained, "for kids right out of the Academy."

A pause.

"Harper's the crazy girl, right?" Ino, be more specific.

"My little sib," Hurley said. "She used to wear, like... rubber ducks and stuff."

"Yeah," Ino said, "that crazy one--I don't know her well, but I've got eyes. Nothing against her, but ow. Her wardrobe is pretty crazy, you got to admit."

And ow. Just... ow.

"Well," she continued, "at least dressing normally is a good thing for a sib?" Unlike being called a freak but Ino was repressing and crap.

Hurley shrugged. "Just feels like she's... I dunno, changing a lot."

"Is she unhappy?" Ino asked. "Or quieter? Or taken up with the wrong sorts?"

"...she's good," Hurley said. "I'm just bein' dumb about it."

"Sudden changes are surprising," she allowed. "But if it doesn't hurt her then even if it's weird--is it worth worrying about?"

"Well, it's not a worry," Hurley said. "Just... part of the weird chain of stuff."

Ino raised her eyebrows inquiringly.

"Did I mention I ran into the dude that killed me? Yeah," Hurley said.

...

...

"...run that by me again."

"...I told you about that other universe, right?" Hurley said. "The one a bunch of us ended up in?"

"...yes," she said, rubbing her head. "So you met real-killer?"

"I met the dude that killed me there. Or... this universe him," Hurley said. "At the dance, even."

"Well," she said slowly, "that's... crappy."

Ino was so not going to feel bad about snapping at him before though. No way.

"Yeah," Hurley said. "But... I dunno. Kinda gave me a kick in the pants, I guess."
