Town Hall, Monday

"So did you take a look at the data?"

"I'm looking," Nate said, with a slight frown on his face. This frown wasn't because of the data; it was because Jan was threatening to do a few really undignified things with some of his pens. "Don't do that--"

"Don't do what?"

"Nothing," he said, pulling a pen out of her hands. "I agree that there's some discrepancies, but I'm not sure that's anything that can't be attributed to human error. The foreman--"

"Krovich."

"--We'd need to see his angle."

"Nate, people think you're dead. I can't just ask them to get on the phone with you."

"Of course not. But you're the journalist..."

"Sigh."

Sophie came in around noon. Noon I say! Looking around for assistance. "Hello? Mr. Mayor?"

She blinked at Jan, then waved carefully. She liked children. When they didn't want to smear sticky things on her.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Mayor. I'm Sophie Devereaux, I own the Fourth Dimension Gallery." She gave him her best professional smile. "We're hoping to hold a benefit for the Boards playhouse this coming weekend, and I wanted to check if there were any paperwork I needed to file to make that happen?"

"It's more that it's running down," Sophie said, getting out a nice fountain pen. Please, she could so sign a signature that would convince people she was the V.P. of IBM. "There were several accidents during the last play, and the electrical system was badly damaged." And the Director was sleeping in the prop closet, but, details. That wasn't going to get fixed soon. But maybe they could get him a closet. "The plays cover the cost of keeping it open, but not the ability to renovate the place, I'm afraid. So, the equivalent of a high-order bake sale, Fandom style. Several of the restaurants have said they'd be happy to participate, and Chef Tatou has promised to make several dishes as well."

"Of course!" Sophie gave him her most brilliant smile, and began filling out the spaces in the form. "Making a check to the Boards business fund would be perfectly acceptable. Thank you, Mr. Mayor."

And she'd really have to look up his actual name at some point, yes.

"Sadly true. The Island is just too small and possibly too strange for much." Sophie gave Jan another smile, tilting her head, then looking back at Nathan. "The business side really isn't Geoffrey's forte. But I'm hopeful that some of the local businesses might contribute materials for the renovations as well, after we have funds to hire workers. The students are wonderful about helping out, but it's going to take more than their expertise." She nodded to Jan. "How old is your daughter? Two?" It never hurt to pay attention to a potential client's children... in moderation, of course.

That was really rather adorable, as well as intimidating. Sophie returned the smile with her lightest one, and said, "You never know. Geoffrey's addicted to Shakespeare, so it'll be years yet if he stays with that, but he might be convinced to do something lighter, some summer." She finished signing the paperwork, and smiled at the Mayor. "I do hope you come to the benefit, as well. The food should be fantastic."

Well, you had to teach the basics, yes? How to handle fences, and competitors, and stupid men in dark alleys? That was just common sense.

"Thank you again, and I'll see you then, Mayor. Bye, little one," Sophie said, waving to Jan.
