Jack had some time to kill in town before the play rehearsal, and he'd never visited Rose at the gym even though he knew from radio she worked there.

He looked bemused as he cast his eyes on the dolls. "I'd heard of take your child to work day, but I didn't know this was it."

Rose made a face at him. "Every day is take your stupid child to work day around here."

"I'm just glad I didn't take Ethics," Jack said, and made a face back at her. "How bad are they?"

"Terrible," she bitched, and it was a very pathetic bitching. "If one of them starts crying than the other one starts up then they compete or something to see who can cry the longest."

"The joy of twins," Jack said. "Can't you give one to your partner and keep the other?"

He was likely courting a bruise, yes.

Rose glared at him. "What partner?"

"The other person sharing custody of -" Jack realized what Rose meant. "Skywalker made you a single parent?"

"It's supposed to be a learning experience," she said dryly.

What else would a dhampir girl be?

"To teach you what, that having two children on your own is hard?" Jack asked. "First, you had enough sense to know that, and, second, I don't see how that relates to ethics."

He leaned over to look at the dolls. "What did you call them?"

"Something about lust," Rose said, making a face. "Apparently it's a bad thing now? Professor Skywalker has a thing about the seven deadly sins. It's like he's a priest or something."

"Dimitri named 'em," she said. "That's Vassily and that one's Kolya." They were actually dressed in two different colours to help with the naming.

"Good Russian names," Jack commented, looking a little closer but not touching.

He didn't want to do anything that would make them wake up.

"Lust is bad. Lust leads to children." Jack rolled his eyes. "I'm sure that's made a huge impression on all the gay men and lesbians in your class."

"That'd be the Dimitri part," Rose agreed with a grin.

God, don't wake them up. She might start crying then.

"Also those of us who can't have kids? Yeah, it's a great lesson. He's normally awesome, but I think he just wants us to suffer."

"So he's like half the other teachers here?" Jack summarized. "Well, at least now you know you won't be missing anything."

"Yeah, it's pretty much like I expected. Lots of screaming children. I see why kids get sent to school," she said wryly. "How're you? Talk to me about something that doesn't have with babies?"

"I think I can manage that," Jack said, glancing at the babies one last time before shifting his full attention to Rose. "The play opens a week from Friday. I think the director may be literally tearing his own hair out this week trying to get us ready."

Rose snickered at him. "Why? Do you guys suck that badly?" she teased.

"We're horrid," Jack informed her, rolling his eyes. "It's a good thing Shakespeare is dead or he'd tear the play from our hands."

"Are you sure he's still dead here?" Rose asked. "I mean, he could be a zombie or something. Show up to ruin the play."

"I haven't heard anything to the contrary," Jack mused. "It'd be rather dreadful if he did show up. Probably he'd steal a role and drop bits all over the stage while playing it, and we couldn't say a word."

She chuckled at the image. "Which part d'you think he'd steal?"

"Traditionally he played kings," Jack said. "He's supposed to have liked writing more than acting. But if he's a zombie anyhow -- he'd steal the good part. He'd be Puck."

"...There's someone named Puck in your play?" Rose asked, making a face. "What was the guy on?"

Jack boggled at her. "...Rose, you honestly never had to read Midsummer Night's Dream?"

Rose stared back. "Um, yeah? Why would I?"

"You can read," Jack said, still stunned and speaking slowly. "I'm fairly certain I've seen you do it."

"... did you even read that dreadful play about the two teenage idiots who kill themselves over each other?"

"Yeah, I can read," Rose said, glaring a little at him. "But I totally have better things to do than read freaking plays from like 5000 years ago."

She had to think about that. "...you mean that movie about the big ship? No, wait, she doesn't die in that one."

"Four hundred, and I have no idea what you're talking about," Jack informed her loftily.

"Okay, why would I read a play from 400 years ago then?" she challenged. "If it was any good, they'd make a movie."

"... right, remember where I haven't actually spent the last six months doing nothing but watching movies so I'm a bit behind," Jack reminded her. "I know there's one for the play we're doing. There's probably one for Star-Crossed, I have better things to do than hunt it down."

"And," he added, "you'd read it because it's a classic and it's important as part of your education. Or so I was reassured many times."

Rose snickered at him. "Better things like...reading?"

"Reading and sex," Jack said cheerfully. "I know you like at least one of those things."

He still thought Rose's education was horribly lacking; he'd just decided arguing with her over it wasn't actually a productive way to spend time.

"Aww, and I wanted to schedule a playdate," Elena teased, sauntering into the gym and giving her friend a nod.

She had her own freak-of-nature baby strapped onto her, in a sling-carry-thing. Mostly so she could keep her hands free and not have to actually hold the stupid droid.

Rose shuddered dramatically. "God, it's like bizarro world or a terrifying future or something," she said.

"I feel like scheduling a pre-emptive abortion," Elena noted. "I'm not pregnant, but you really can't be too careful."

"Or could just have 'em take it all out," she said thoughtfully. "Then nothing to worry about ever. Me, I'm just staying away from Moroi. Forever."

"That's a thought," Elena mused. "It's not like I'm planning on settling down or anything."

Her head tilted slightly at the last part. "Are you only allowed to ... have kids with Moroi?"

"Probably be cheaper than birth control in the long run," Rose considered. "And less messy."

She snickered. "Nah, we're just not fertile with anyone but them. Like mules kinda."

"Then you're safe," Elena reasoned. "Don't bed any Moroi, and you don't need to worry if you're late, right?"

"Damn straight," she agreed with a grin. "Which usually makes life a lot easier."

"Must be nice," she sighed. "By the way, your boy is cute."

Not that Dimitri really seemed like a boy, but it sounded more fun phrased like that.

Rose shot Elena a quick glance then eyed the twin boys. "I don't think you're supposed to favour one over the other."

Avoiding the statement? Noooo, never.

"They're a little young," Elena countered playfully. "I'll stick with tall and floppy-haired. Except no sticking-with. I mean, I was flirting, yeah, but only until I figured out who he was."

It was totally a mark of how much Rose trusted Elena that there wasn't so much bristle at the flirting remark. "There's something about that hair, yeah," Rose said with a little smile. "He's got the whole package."

Did he ever.

"So what you're saying is that he's got a nice package?"

Elena's innocent face wasn't so hot, today.

Rose opened her mouth then shut it again. Then opened her mouth again.

"...so how was that date the other night?"q
